Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How do you feel about kissing your children on the lips?

DD has started kissing with her mouth closed, no more slobbery side of the cheek stuff. It bothers DH that she tries to kiss us on the lips. I was just reading the newspaper, and found an article on parents that get "grossed out" by the idea of kissing their children on the lips. Maybe it is just the way I was brought up... I still kiss my parents on the lips, and find nothing wrong or weird about it

  • I give them lip kisses now that they are little. As they get older, I am sure it will stop. I don't kiss my family on the mouth and doubt my kids will kiss me when they are grownups.

I don't see a problem with my babies giving me kisses on the mouth.

  • We are lip kissers.

I don't kiss my parents on the lips anymore but I did as a child.

  • I know that DS will grow out of it, but right now I LOVE big, wet, slobbery, toddler kisses!

  • We are lip kissers...  my whole family is.... grandparents, parents, everyone!
  • Add us to the lip kissing crew. When I was growing up my family never kissed each other. Looking back now I think that is weird. I don't want my kid to grow up in a household that doesn't express affection.
  • I personally don't care either way.

My parents had two different ways, my dad and brother are and have always been icked about affection like that.  And my mother and I are lip kissers.

    Its just how it is.

  • My parents (who are divorced) still try to kiss me on thelips once in a while.  I don't like it AT ALL, but feel bad saying anything.

But growing up I had no problem with it until I was in my 20s.  I love my babies giving kisses on the lips.

  • I always kissed my parents on the lips when I was younger. Not anymore though. My sister and I sometimes still kiss on the lips though.

I love getting smooches from DD, and will lip kiss her as long as she wants to do that. Then we'll be cheek kissers.

  • I wouldn't say I'm grossed out by kissing your child on the lips, but it's just never really something I've done in my family.

  • We're lip kissers.  B is actually sad because J will only kiss me on the lips.  He rarely kisses B at all.

And I'm glad to see all the other lip kissers out there.  This came up on 9-12 at some point and I was told that I was pretty much a freaky Southern hick because my family lip kisses.

  • I think it would be weird for my son to kiss me on my lips when he's a teenager.  But now... fine by me and encouraged (he mostly "blows" kisses).

  • I'm in the no lip kissing camp. To each their own, but my initial reaction is that I do think it's kind of gross. I think of lip kissing as a romantic adult thing, not a familial thing. I'd be very willing to bet that this is a regional or cultural difference.

My parents were affectionate. I'm affectionate. You can be affectionate without kissing on the lips.

not so sure about regional - born and raised in MA, just recently moved south. I do agree that culturally there is a difference, and religion sometimes plays a part.

  • We've had this conversation before and I can't believe that a parent would turn away a child/toddler/baby who wanted to give them a kiss on the lips! I would never ever turn them away. That sounds so sad to me. I will kiss my boys on the lips for as long as they will let me.... no probably even longer than that!

  • I kiss DS on the mouth still, but I probably won't once he's older. I'm thinking once he's old enough to have stinky morning breath ;p

  • I'm in the no lip-kissing camp.  This isn't why I don't kiss my kids on the lips (just didn't grow up doing that), but has anyone seen this article about how saliva transfer can spread cavities between parent and child?  Thought it was interesting and I definitely stopped sharing a fork with DS after reading it - not that I did it that often.
