1st Trimester

What to do first?!

I thought you ladies could help me out on this board more than any other...

My DH and I are TTC, have been since May 2010. This is the first month my period has been late. I'm five days late and scared/anxious to take a test. DH and I agreed to wait until Wednesday, that would make me a week late.

Once we do... If it's positive, do I call my OB for an appointment to confirm or do I just go to the hospital to get tested? I'm not sure what to do, this is my first time even dealing with the possibility of being pregnant. I would think just to call my doc and set up an appointment... but one of my friends said it's quicker to go to the hospital and said they do it for free?!

Please advise!

Re: What to do first?!

  • Call your doc and set up an appt.  My doctor doesn't even start seeing patients until they are 8 weeks.

If you are already late for you period, you should get a positive on a test now. Oh and start taking prenatal vitamins if you aren't already.

  • I would just call your doctor. Why bother the hassle of going to the hospital?!

  • take a test then work on the next part....

no rush.... you dont wantto get to over excited your already planning step 2 before step one.....

Exactly. Why wait? And a positive urine test is all you will need. They won't have you come in to "confirm" it unless something is wrong or you have a history of false positives. Like this pp said, they'll make an appointment for 8 weeks (usually).

  • I'm already taking pre-natal vitamins - so I have that covered. I have been taking them for months! I'm going to get a home test today... but a friend of mine told me that I should go get a blood test at the hospital to confirm the pregnancy?!

I do not have a history of being late more than 24 hours... so I'm pretty sure this is the real deal. If I get a positive, I will call my OB to make an appointment, but I just didn't know if it needed to be soon or 8 weeks or whatever.

You ladies are a HUGE help! Thanks so much!

Cycles can vary a lot even if you are ALWAYS "regular". They can just start going haywire one month. It has happened to me.

You don't need a blood test, or "confirmation". Just get a home test, call your doctor. Easy peasy. Good luck.

  • LOL I think my Dr's office thought I was crazy when I first called them after taking a HPT.  I was under the impression that you had to be seen right away.  They were like hunny if you had a positive pregnancy test then you're pregnant, we'll see you in a month.  It is so hard to wait for that first appointment but totally worth the wait!

  • That's the impression I was under as well... but apparently is not the case! LOL Thanks for all the help ladies and with easing my mind in this process. I didn't want to stress over what I needed to do next!
  • Well, first, take a home pregnancy test.  Any brand should be positive for you if you're pregnant, since you're already late.  First Response was positive for me 6 days before my period was due, so if you really want to be sure you that you're taking the test with the earliest detection of the pregnancy hormone (that I know of) then take that brand.

next, hope to see you back here on the board with a BFP!

If you're pregnant, just call your doc and they'll see you around 8 weeks or so.  Don't waste your time, energy and money at the ER.  There are people there that are waiting for real emergencies - not just to confirm they're pregnant! (that is, if they even do that there!? never heard of it)

    Good luck!
