Did anyone stop BFing cold turkey?

I am stopping BFing cold turkey with DD.  If you knew her, you would understand why I need to do it this way.  If you stopped cold turkey, how did it go for you and your LO?  I have just been manually expressing only to relieve uncomfortable pressure when I absolutely have to.  DD is eating finger food fairly well, but isn't drinking very much from a bottle or a sippy.  Just a few sips here and there.  Before going cold turkey (we just started yesterday) she would drink water fairly well from a sippy, but never needed to drink too much, as she was still BFing about 4 - 5 times a day.  I appreciate any advice or comments from anyone who's been through this!

  • I did but DS was 9 1/2 months old.  He was getting teeth and bite a couple of times and I had to have a test done that wouldnt allow me to BF for 24 hours so I decided that was it.  He was already drinking from a bottle for others so we just kept that up as well as sippy's for water.  GL

  • I got Mastitis twice, so I weaned slowly for fear of getting it again.  You said you are expressing if you get uncomfortable.. I would continue to do that for a few days.  Good luck!

  • we quit cold turkey at 15 months because I had to leave town to help family out in an emergency. DS was addicted to me and milk though I swear. I don't think we'd have been able to do it any other way... I was even nursing him 3 times a night at 15 months, it was ridiculous.

Anyways, I don't know how it would have worked if I was still around DS and trying to quit as he was demanding, but my advice is just don't give in.

As for yourself, oh my it HURT for about a week and a half I was not expressing in the beginning and was just taking tylenol and trying the cold cabbage in the bra technique. I found ice packs worked nice to comfort a bit and expressing in a hot shower. I eventually took a few benadryl to help try to dry it up and feel like taking the meds really helped me.

either way, good luck! it is not easy at all. :(

  • I stopped cold turkey when DD was 9 months old. I had zero trouble. She loved the taste of formula, and didn't ever act as though she was missing out on the breast. She didn't drink from a bottle regulariy before that either. She had hated the bottle. I hope all my children will be as easy to wean as she was.
