BLW question

I've only started researching BLW, but I'm wondering...is this an all-or-nothing method? What I mean is, is there any reason not to feed DS more traditional purees/cereals as well as follow BLW guidelines?

Re: BLW question

  • Technically if you do purees it's not BLW (since BLW is kiddo self feeding only) but that doesn't mean that you can't offer both if you want!  Do what feels like it would work best for your family ;-)

  • I'm planning on doing a combo too. We are going to give her rice cereal mixed with BM once a day for the first month or until she starts eatting more meat.

I know I still have 2 more months but I'm already getting nervous. It still feels like I just had her. Time is flying by too fast!

  • I guess specifically what I was wondering was if you still get some of the benefits of BLW if you don't follow it to a T, or if going off-method basically defeats the purpose entirely.

Honestly, I think it just depends on your philosophy about starting solids - or why you want to introduce finger foods early.

For me, doing purees too wouldn't have worked because I wanted him to totally set the pace and I wanted him to be eating what we were eating as quickly as possible.  But if you are more interested in doing finger foods earlier to get baby used to handling food on his own, then doing a mix isn't going to defeat the purpose.

Not sure if that makes sense or not!  I really don't think you can go wrong - purees, BLW or a mix.  I do think it's helpful to introduce finger foods early even if you are doing purees - but that's not based on much besides my own opinion ;-)

  • i'd second ncbelle above.

we did a mixture of purees/spoons and BLW. we wanted her to have a mixture of textures, and her DCP was uncomfortable with BLW in its purest form.

for us, the most critical components were to go at her pace, follow her interest, and wait for her readiness (not starting at a arbitrary date). in our case, we started after 6mos, and skipped baby cereal altogether. she had an early pincer grip, so our puree stage was quite shortlived.

  • Thanks guys, just the info I was looking for!

I agree with all of this.  The biggest part of BLW that I really like is the idea that the child is totally in control of what goes into his body and how much.  It also gets away from having LO eat for your approval and instead eat for their own nourishment.   I think you can feed purees respectfully, but it's much harder to follow your LOs cues of when they are eating to please you since you wield the spoon vs. eating out of hunger.
