Mementos, keepsakes, firsts, etc

Interested to hear what people may be planning to track baby's milestones or preserving those special mementos/ firsts. What sorts of things will u be tracking or saving, or planning. any cool ideas, or even certain scrapbook type book that people plan to use or have used in the past ?

Re: Mementos, keepsakes, firsts, etc

  • We plan on doing a lot of photos, and then using an internet service to make baby books. I'm not a scrap booker, so it makes it easy for me!

  • I have keepsake boxes for my boys and I just add milestones into their photo albums (I add a couple of pics of them each month and write a little something about what they are learning or doing).

I had planned to scrapbook and do all sorts of crafty things but I just don't seem to find the time.
  • I do shutterfly books. I did one every 3 months for her first year and one every 6 months after that. We have her going home outfit, first haircut, etc saved, but they're just stored for now.

  • We received a big stuffed teddy bear as a gift for DD when she was born. Every month for the first year we took a picture of DD I'm the same spot on the couch next to her bear. In each one she wore only a diaper and either a bow or Chrismas socks or something related to the time of year. I love seeing them all together.
  • I'm going to try to scrapbook! It might look like shit at first but I'm going to try!
  • I take a shit ton of pics of DS but totally slacked on his baby book and scrapbook. I have a box with all his stuff in it though.

  • I have a box with their hospital bracelets, monitor stickies (for my first), and ultrasound pics. It also has their hospital name card thingees that were on the bassinet, and my first's NICU visitor card and his resuscitation sheets (<--- kind of morbid...)

No baby books, and none of them have had any professional pictures done except for my oldest who had them done at school. I'm a terrible mother.

  • I *thought* I'd commit to keeping track of such things (milestones/firsts) with my first, but it only lasted for maybe four to five months. I used to be a photographer and would take pictures of them frequently. That's about it. I have some things written down that I kept track of, but didn't do the whole shabang. I do have some mementos.

  • I've always liked the monthly photos with a list of what the baby is doing that month.
Thankfully my MIL is a photographer so even if I fall behind in pics the girls will be well documented!
  • My MIL got us a cute baby book that - hopefully - we will use. It's traditional in DH's family to do those monthly photos with a stuffed animal or toy so we will definitely do that. I hope I can keep up. I'm usually terrible at these things.

We have a baby book and a scrapbook for DS. Planning on doing the same thing this time. I also set up a Google drive to hold the billion pics and videos I take.

ETA I also keep a journal for DS. I write in it every couple weeks or when something happens that I want him to know about. Plan on doing that for this guy too.
  • For everyone concerned with keeping up with photos/milestones: I take all my photos on my iPhone and they seem to turn out great. I probably take about 10-20 photos of the boys a month while they are playing or if we go somewhere special. Then every few months I upload them all to Costco's website and get them printed. I write a few notes about what they were doing that month and stick them in an album. (If you happen to buy your photo albums at Costco too, you get 100 free prints!)

I am the worst about keeping up with things but this has worked for me and literally takes me about twenty minutes every few months.
  • I love Shutterfly.  Especially since I can easily upload photos from my phone.  Did a first year book for DS and have done a family "yearbook" every year since.  I also did a pregnancy one with DS with all my weekly photos/surveys, pictures of the nursery, baby showers and his birth story.  I've already started a pregnancy one for this babe and plan to do a separate first year book in addition to our yearly family book.

  • I had a calendar for DD that I wrote EVERYTHING in for the first year. I made a shadow box with DD's newborn hat from the hospital, her hospital bands and mine and her bassinet id card. I also have her hair from her first haircut and her feeding charts from her first few days.

  • I'm not really a photo person but my MIL is really sentimental about photos so we will try to take some for her. My parents kept the wrist bands for my brother and me as well as congratulations cards from relatives and friends. They also kept one of my baby curls and the weight chart that my poor mum had to take in with me once a week for forever (I wasn't much of an eater for the first two months. Don't have that problem now!). Some photos of my brother and me with my dad's father who died before I turned one, etc. I still remember when my parents gave us these boxes of memories -- it was really special and I still look at them to remember, not myself so much as the people surrounding and supporting my parents when they were young.
  • For our first, I did a shadow box for the firsts: one of the tiny newborn diapers (unused, of course) a paci from the hospital, the birth announcement, our first family picture, a onesie my MIL had made with all his birth stats on it and his name, and some other stuff.  It's on our mantle and we already have the frame for this baby's shadowbox so that they match.  I'm going to eventually do one for some of our wedding keepsakes too.

I did weekly photos until he was a year old and we did monthly photos with the stickers.  He sat in the same chair beside the same stuffed animal for size comparison.  It's really cool to look back on those photos.  I plan to do that again.

No scrapbooks, because I suck at them.  I haven't done much at all with the first one's baby book, although I do plan to fill it out at some point.  I used facebook to mark a bunch of the milestones.  The big "firsts" were posted as Life Events on facebook so that I would never forget them.  I've also done monthly blog posts to him, describing the previous month and whatever milestones or special moments he has had (although I'm a few months behind right now and really need to get on that.)  My husband made a gmail account for him and has been sending him emails about once a month with photos and thoughts about how he is growing up.  He'll give him the password when he's 18.  ;)

I have a box for mementos that are not in the shadow box or in the baby book.  It's a wooden chest my dad made with his name on the front.  This baby will get one too.

  • I have a baby book for my son and i have kept everything in it! I also have a winnie the pooh box that has cards from birth and his birthdays, coming home outfit, first pair of boots, etc. His baby book is loaded with hospital bracelets and pictures from during my pregnancy up to 18 months. I love looking back at it, it amazes me how much he has grown! :)
