Two Under 2

2+ Children - Daycare costs?

Although the cost will vary significantly from location to location, I wanted to ask what everyone pays for their 2+ children on a monthly basis for childcare at a center.

Once my DS is born, my monthly daycare costs are increasing to $2400!  That is more than our mortgage and about 60% of my take home pay....it still blows my mind.

TIA!

  • We are outside Philly in PA and it will be about $2200. Ditto more than the mortgage and ditto alsmot 2/3 of my pay. It stinks huh? Makes you feel like it isn't worth working...but we still need my salary.

  • My mom runs an amazing home day care. Her daycare room was our Florida room and looks better then most preschools. She charges $100 a week. And has one family with 3 kids and gives a discount so she may for 2 kids. So for two with out a discount it would be $800 a month.

  • I live outside Boston, MA and we pay $324 a week for both of them (they go 4 days a week). It is a wonderful in home day care. We pay $45 a day for my older son, and my younger son gets a 20% discount so we pay $36 a day for him. That is VERY cheap for my area. I am not sure how we got so lucky to find such a great place that is also so cheap.

I had my older son in a center before we moved to the in home day care and it was going to cost us $575 a week (for 4 days) for 2 kids to go there.

Have you looked at a nanny -- sometimes it is cheeper than 2 in daycare.

Or a home daycare?  A lot of times, if you can find someone you can trust, your child can get more attention and feel more comfortable at someone's home.  I take care of 2 children at my homel, in addition to my own son, and each of them pays $750 a month.

  • I live by you and for 2 kids at an in home daycare, it will be $350 a week. Right now we pay $225 for my daughter. I am hoping to go part time next year because that is way too much to spend on daycare and I want to be home more. $2400 seems like alot for around here too.

  • It was a little over $500/wk.

After a couple of months, we ended up going with an aupair.  It was less expensive, even including buying her a car, cell phone, food, gas, plane tickets, etc.  I also really like how flexible she is.

  • Our center was 313.50/wk so about 1254/month, but they just increased their prices and now it'll be 1330.

We're in Baton Rouge, LA. That's about 60% of my salary too :(

  • We're in Albany, NY, and we pay $466 a week, so I believe it will be about $1800 a month. I think it's going to be one of my paychecks a month. I just went back to work as a teacher. Sooo expensive daycare is.

  • I live in Dallas, TX and pay $390 per week ($195 for each kid per week).
  • Chicago suburbs - paying $500/week for my 2y/o son and 5 mo daughter, FT
  • I'm in the northern Chicago burbs and when #2 arrives in April, we will be paying right around $2400 for two in DC.  I've considered looking into a less expensive alternative but, right now, we are using a day care that is run by the school district I teach in and, to me, it's worth it to pay the extra money to have our kids in a location and with people that I have trusted before even meeting them (because I know so many friends/coworkers who have used the same DC).

  • my twins are only in daycare 2 days a week and Griffin is in 3 days a week... We pay $2K/month for daycare. It's pretty much my base salary... I only earn my bonus and my benefits (which does include a company car... so it's pretty good).  I also love working- so this is perfect for me being PT... even though daycare is expensive- it's great for us all.  We could find a cheaper daycare for sure- but I'm willing to pay more for a place we love- which we do.
