Extreme sciatic nerve pain...please help!!!

Starting today I've had this extreme very very painful nerve that shoots from my lower back into my butt and literally stops me in my tracks, I can't walk or put weight on my leg until it stops.  I was in tears at work today b/c I was in the middle of the hallway and couldn't move and then it went away for a little and then came back.

I just came home and it came back as soon as I walked out of the bathroom....to the point that DH had to carry me to the couch b/c I couldn't put weight on my right leg.

What am I suppose to do?  anyone know ways to help with this b/c if this is going to be an everyday thing I'm gonna lock myself inside b/c the pain is so intense when it happens.

  • tell me about it!Have had pain since Sunday. I hear pelvic floor tilts can help. I had my DH massage my lower back and butt where the nerve is. Other than that there's really nothing you can do.

  • i stretch, you can even do yoga that helped me out a lot yesterday.  or even try a heating pad and then have DH massage lower back and butt.  you can try telling LO to get off your nerve Big Smile it never works for me.  i know how you feel i hope you can find some relief.

  • Massage and stretching works really well. Google some good stretches that are pregnant belly friendly.

  • For me sleeping with the snoogle helps, whenever I don't sleep with it at night I have bad sciatic nerve pain the next day.

It's the worst pain I've ever felt!!!  I don't know what to do if I'm in a store and it happens b/c I literally can't move

  • I have random pelvic/sacral issues every once and awhile. Being biased (I am a PT) I have been seeing a physical therapist for the last month and have been loving life. Find yourself a good one. I have a couple of pregnant patients I see once a week as long as they need an am one of those patients going once a week. :) BTW... Doesn't sound like true "sciatica" to me, although I can't really say because I haven't evaluated you

I actually slept really good last night with my pillows so this sucks that I have this

  • Stretching, and ice, it helps the area inflamed around the nerve and helps the nerve inflammation.

  • I've had it ever since I found out I was pregnant (weird I know) certain chairs trigger the pain, walking, standing for long periods, the only time it doesn't hurt is when I'm laying on my side when I'm going to sleep...all my doctor told me was heat therapy (microwavable heatpack, LOVE IT) and tylenol and if that didn't help then we would go for more extreme paths...last week was ultimately my worst week ever...no matter what I did it was absolutely horrible shooting pain that made me cry out every time I stood up from sitting or laying down. But ultimately the heat is what helped me the best and just like my doctor said it'll come and go and this week it seems to have disappeared but I haven't forgotten about it I'm sure just like Aunt Flo appears this too shall reappear...lol Good Luck!
  • yep, heat.  I also get a lot of H backrubs.

If you're getting near-crippling pain though, talk to your doctor about it.  They can give you some techniques & exercises to help deal with the pain, and to try & work out the knot when you get it.

This for sure!  Physical Therapy might help like pp said, but I swear by my chiropractic care.  Others might say that the chiropractor might not help in the situation but I feel like it wouldn't hurt you any more and my chiropractor is all about total care (including massage therapy).

What exactly is true sciatica pain? I can't imagine it being more painful then this b/c I can't even move when it happens.

I found out my obgyn has a guy come in every Wed morning to help with the PG ladies who are having back issues so I'm gonna ask about it tomorrow at my appt.

  • I know exactly how you feel, and I'm so sorry that you have to experience this! My doctor gave me a few exercises to do (they haven't helped much), but they are going to send me to physical therapy. The heating pad and sleeping with a pillow between my legs has been helping some too. Good luck and feel better!

  • Yep, I have it too. It's awful. Any twisting of my torso sets it off and randomly walking I'll have it. It's truly a shocking pain. I use heating pads, Tylenol, weekly chiro adjustments and massages (included in chiro/insurance thankyougod)....and sleeping with a pillow between knees @ night.
  • All good advise above!  I just thought I would mention a few things my dr told me.  When standing try to always stand on both feet equally and never just on 1 leg or the other (this is actually easier said than done)  make sure to bend at the knees and don't bend at the waist.  Heating pads really help me a lot.

  • I'm so sorry.  I had that with my first pregnancy and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.  Horrible.  Just horrible.  The snoogle helped some, so did a heating pad.  What helped the most was the physical therapy.  I was sent to a women's hospital where the therapists knew how to deal with it.  Doing the exercises regularly helped immensely.  Didn't make it go away, but made it livable.  Mine never went away until a few months post partum.
