January 2011 Moms

I know it's silly to be mad about this

Or rather, it's ridiculous that I'm even believing old wives tales...

But! I went in for my 20 week appointment today and met with a new doctor who told me the baby's heart rate. None of the other doctors have done this, and DH and I were actually happy about that as we didn't want to start comparing it to what people say about heart rate and gender predictions. Well, she kinda just blurted it out. Geez, doc... you're making it hard to stay team green when you are taunting us like this!

I know, I know... there are exceptions, it's not always accurate, and sometimes doctors miscount. I can't be mad at her... she was giving me information about the baby, and there is no way she could've known that I'm such a spaz!

Re: I know it's silly to be mad about this

  • I don't think I'd put any stock in the heart rate predictions. Once upon a time my mom was told based on my heart rate and my size that I was a boy.

Still....you'd think they would ask if you want to know first!

  • Both DD and DS's heartrates in utero were/are both about 155 BPM.

    DD is a girl.

    DS is a boy.

  • It really is nothing but an old wives tale and doesn't mean anything at all. No matter how many people say "it was right for us," it's a 50/50 shot as much as an Intelligender test.  Heart rates are high from around 9-12 weeks and then start to slow down. It's completely made up!

  • Well it is true that a woman's heart rate is faster than a mans lol... I just don't think this should count on a baby because there heart rate's are constantly changing.

You know, the funniest thing is that when I left I called DH to tell him and mentioned that the heart rate seemed higher the last time... well, no kidding! I was not aware until a couple of hours ago that the heart rate slowed down. Clearly, I have so much to learn!

  • i can see why that would bug you, who wants someone dangling that over your head while you're trying to show some will power!?

  • I wouldn't even think about the heartbeat OWT if I were you. My doctor doesn't always tell me what my baby's is, but sometimes it has been over the 140s and other times under. It totally depends on what the baby is doing in there at the time they check it...nothing else.

  • I think the heart rate has more to do with size of the fetus rather than sex.  Since size often corresponds to sex (ie boys are often born slightly bigger than girls) the heart rate can sometimes correspond to sex.  But some girls are ahead of the curve and some boys are a little behind so its still a crap shoot.  For me, it was true.  Heart rate was >160 (until last week) and its a girl.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

This is true... I didn't feel a lot of movement this morning anyway, so maybe the baby was sleeping :)

I'm not putting too much stock in this, it was just kind of one of those irrational pregnancy moments. I think we've all had those!

LOL. My point is, they both had the same heartrate in utero and are not the same gender.

I know it's hard not let your mind go there - but seriously - think about it - can you name one thing about a penis that would make a heart beat slower?  Seriously?  It's totally irrelevant to your baby's sex and indicates nothing more than the fact that his/her heart is beating.

  • if it makes you feel better, my LO's heart rate ran about the same as my two friends who just had boys (we're having a girl - very obviously, according to the technician!).  they both say that the heartrate thing is true, but not till the very end of pregnancy, since the baby's rate changes so much.  also, while i was listening to out baby's heart rate, it shot up, simply because i was excited to hear it!!  don't worry about it too much - it changes all the time. :)

  • Every single old wives tale that I paid attention to said we were having a boy.  So did the Chinese Astrology test and that urine test (yes I knew it was BS when I bought it... I did it for fun), and also people constantly said things like "it's a boy... I can tell."  So....  don't worry...  none of these, including heart rate, mean anything.
  • Don't go on heart rate.  Mine have only once been what the old wives tale said, out of 3 kids.
