Protein Ideas?

Cooper eats all finger foods.  He eats a ton and doesn't seem to be picky.  I'm stumped though with new ideas for protein.  He eats cheese, beans, turkey meatballs, and chicken nuggets (yeah, I know..) - Oh and I have gotten him the gerber pasta pickups that have meat in them and he likes those.  He can't handle pieces of real chicken or pork or anything yet... Too hard to gum that.   So anyway, what are some other good ideas for protein?  Any ideas?

Re: Protein Ideas?

  • We get protein from eggs, tofu (Liam loves it sauteed in olive oil and garlic), almond butter, peanut butter, cottage cheese and yogurt.   He'll occasionally eat lunch meat, but not much.

  • Quinoa - it's like pasta but a grain. Super healthy. I also used to grind up chicken with potatos for Carson when he was about that age to make it easier to eat.

  • Okay that made no sense "like pasta but a grain" anyway - it's a good option. They even have it in bulk at Costco.

  • Tofu cubes (cam likes it sauteed in garlic oil too :), cut up black bean burgers, tuna fish, fish sticks

Ditto this.  Both my kids love quinoa.

Also, we sometimes do smoothies for breakfast.  If he can drink through a straw, you might try a smoothie with protein powder.

  • Oh yeah he ate quiche last night. I should do scrambled eggs more often. I should try fish sticks too. We need to eat fish at home. We pretty much never do even though I like it. I just didn't grow up eating fish so I don't know how to cook it very well.

  • Gavin loves chicken that's been cooking all day in a crockpot.  It shreds so easy into little pieces.

  • Hard boiled eggs, tofu, hummus, yogurt.  Canned salmon or anchovies/sardines are cheap and you can fix like tuna.  All lower in mercury than tuna.  Quorn is a meat substitute made from a fungus that has very few additives.  I hear a lot of toddlers like the roast variety.  They also nakemake a "chicken" tenders version and a ground version you could make into meatballs.  Or you could to ground turkey, pork, or beef.  If you do nuts, there are all sorts of nut butters like almond (have at Costco) or sunflower that you can thin with water and spread on bread or use as a dip.  Tahini would work too.
  • How do you feel about nut butter? Our pedi said the newest news regarding allergies is that there is no reason to wait on peanuts and other nuts. So there's that...

J loves scrambled eggs, tempeh, tofu, hummus.

  • Yeah I'm going to buy some almond butter today I think. I don't know why I haven't been getting in hummus either because Ben eats hummus all time so I'll give him that. I think that I'm not sure im ready for tofu though. Blech!

  • *you* don't have to eat the tofu... :)

  • My Cooper loves fish, scrambled eggs, omelet, cheese sticks, baked beans, home made meatballs, cheese quesadillas, yoghurt, quiche/fritatta - hopefully your Cooper will love some of these too!

And fish is super easy to cook (and quick!) - we just pan fry it in light dusting flour & it tastes so good!

Do you worry about the mercury in tuna?   I just found this site that calculates how much tuna you can safely eat, and it's just so little that's OK for a kid... Have you asked your ped about it?  I wonder if it's really that bad or if this site overdoes it?

I dont worry about it too much. I make it mixed with mayo and shredded zucchini and carrots so that bulks it up... Ill bet she eats less than what the web site recommends (1/3 can per week). She usually just eats it a couple times a week and with crackers and stuff and I don't buy albacore. I always finish it off for her :) Her dr was not concerned with it as she is pretty severely anemic and it has been helping that! Its up to you as to what you are comfortable with though.
