16weeker-not grabbing toys

My 16 weeker (he'll be 4 months on the 28th) is not reaching for toys. If I put a rattle in his fist he'll hold it but he won't reach for toys on his own. He does most of the other milestones, assisted sitting, holds head up really well, standing on flat surfaces. Any advice? I know he'll develop at his own pace but curious to see if there is anyone can commesurate...

Re: 16weeker-not grabbing toys

  • My son only recently started grabbing toys a couple weeks ago---around 13-14 weeks--or reaching for them with any clear intentions. It helped him to work with things he could grab more easily, which included burp cloths (I just place it crumpled on his chest and he'd grab it, lift it, chew on it, etc)  and a soft lightweight rattle (he LOVES this one https://shop.learningcurve.com/product/detail/Y2471B1?locale=en_US). Harder, smaller and heavier toys were too difficult. Larger, soft, lightweight toys like small stuffed animals are good because they are easy to grab.

  • My DD just started reaching for objects about a week ago... I wouldn't worry too much. I swear the milestones are there to just stress parents out... Every babys different.

    SO TRUE.

Do you have an activity gym or something similar?  I would remove the big hanging toys and just clip links on instead.  Make sure they dangle down low enough so they are within the babies reach.  This is how DS learned to reach for things (and finally open up that clenched baby fist!) so maybe it will help you too :)

  • DS just started to reach and grab toys this last week.  He would hold on to blankets and such if I gave them to him, but just last week he started showing interest in reaching for them on his own.  He was 18 wks last week.  1ht

This all the way.  My DD has made most of her milestones, like head control, sitting up with support, etc., but she will not roll (either tummy to back or back to tummy) and doesn't seem interested in doing so at all.

DD started grabbing blankets, burp cloths, and her own clothes maybe about a month to a month and a half ago, but didn't start grabbing toys until 13 weeks.  Only last week did it start becoming an every day thing.

  • Mine are 18 weekers and they don't grab at things everyday.  They were born a month early...but I like to think that they ae just lazy.  THey love the hooded bath towels that we have for them....and hang onto them or their bibs, but reaching up for things that dangle from the play mat just seems like too much work for them...hehehe.  Don't feel bad...I asked this about 2 weeks ago and I have not worried about it since.  I have learned that every baby is different.

  • DS just turned 5 months on the 15th & he just recently started reaching for stuff regularly a couple of weeks ago. Every child is different.
