What is the significance of a coming home outfit?

What is the significance of a coming home outfit?  This probably sounds silly to some, but I have no clue why you dress a new baby up just to go home?  I'm thinking that there will be family/friends at the house awaiting the arrival?  I don't think there is anything wrong with it, just don't quite understand the reasoning?  Please do explain!

Re: What is the significance of a coming home outfit?

  • I think it is because the coming home outfit, for many people, ends up being the "baby's first pictures" outfit.

  • for me, I put all three of my kids in the same outfit I was brought home in. Thought it was a great "tradition"...Of course, I have changed that now, and this baby will have a completely different outfit. I chose one that was more suited to my SO's personality, seeing as this is baby #4 for me, but #1 for him.

  • I am with you on this. With DS, I didn't have a "coming home outfit" for him. I just packed a cute sleeper. When I left the hospital, I really just wanted to get home and really didn't think much about what I was going to put him in. Mind you, we didn't have a whole bunch of people waiting for us at home, waiting to take pictures either. I don't plan on an outfit for this one either, and have packed a cute sleeper again. That's just me though, but some people really put a lot of thought into and that's just fine too!
  • I don't see the point in a frilly take home outfit. I feel bad when I see babies in lace dresses that I know are probably super itchy. The take home outfit we got for LO consists of a pink onesie, little green sweatpants, a zip up hoodie and hat. Something comfy but still cute.

  • For me, a coming home outfit is the first outfit the baby ever wears. In the hospital, they are all wrapped up in hospital stuff. Then they give the baby to you and she's all yours and you can put her in her little outfit and take her to her new home. To me, that's significant.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to put her in something frilly and uncomfy. Just something cute.

It's a ritual, like carrying a new bride across a threshold.

  • To us the coming home outfit that we will put our LO in, will become a keepsake. Something that I can pass down to her to bring her LO home in if she has a little girl (and of course wants that and it fits). My grandma will be giving us my dads coming home outfit and if we have a boy in the future, that will be his coming home outfit.

  • I'm not the type of person to place significance on this but we did think putting this LO in the same outfit we brought DS home in would be cute.  No one will know but us, but that's ok.
