Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

No more bottles-help!

DD turned 1 on Saturday and we have successfully weaned from formula but she will not drink milk out of anything but a bottle.  She will drink water from her sippy cup but not milk.  DH is trying to get her to bed right now with no bottle.  The pedi said to take the bottles away and if she goes a few days without milk it's ok.  She will eventually get it!  She cried and cried for a bottle tonight but we didn't give in.  It's killing me!  Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks!!

Re: No more bottles-help!

  • I think when you choose to ditch the bottle is a personal choice.  There's no "right" answer.  DD loves her bottle and it's the only thing that gets her to sleep.  She won't drink milk from a cup (though we've been offering it all day everyday for the past 7 months), but she eats a lot of dairy, so I'm not too worried.  She only gets a bottle at bedtime.  I'm hopeful that we can wean that by 18 months, but if not, I'm ok with that too.  GL with whatever you decide!

  • I tried the cold turkey method twice but gave in both times after two days of no milk. I just tried again a few days ago, for his afternoon milk, and he took it no problem! Woohoo! Next week I'll replace the morning bottle, and the week after (maybe) I'll switch the nighttime bottle.

This may not be a popular opinion around here, but honestly, I figure a few extra months on the bottle is no big deal. His doctor didn't even mention weaning from bottles at his twelve-month appt.

  • We just did it cold turkey, however, DS wasn't taking a bottle to go to bed.  Maybe you should wean the bedtime bottle and then wean off of the bottle completely.  One step at a time.  I also agree wtih PP though, do it when you are ready.  Your LO won't be damaged for life just because they took a bottle for a few more months
  • The pedi made it sound like there wasn't a choice!  Obviously I want to do what's best for her.  I am all for still giving her a bottle at bedtime!  I was just going by what the pedi recommended.  I think I have to stick with happy mom/happy baby at this point!  It's not going to hurt her to have a bottle a little longer and it makes me feel better that some of your are still giving bottles at bedtime.  I am still trying to figure out how to get her to drink milk from the sippy cup!  Thanks for the advice!
  • I'd give her the bottle, she's still so little!  I don't see anything wrong with getting a bedtime bottle at her age.  I'd drop them during the day, but keep the bedtime one for a little longer.

FWIW, my BF's DD self-weaned from the bedtime bottle at 2.5.  I'm not sure I'll let it go on that long, but it's good to know that kids will eventually let you know they're ready to give it up!

I agree with this. Babies don't HAVE to give up their bottle right at a year. DS just gave his bedtime bottle up last week. No big deal. Our pedi never had a problem with it.

  • My ds used his bottles way past one, maybe 18 mos. I did not feel the urgency to do away with bottles- he would drink water from a sippy just not milk. I figured considering he went from getting his milk from boob to bottle he may have been just being picky :) My friend recommended Born Free sippy cups and those worked great for him.

  • My DD, who is our 2nd child, is 15 months old and I still give her 3 bottles a day.  I went cold turkey with my son (our first child), and it seemed that he gave up milk along with the bottle.  I am trying to wean her from the afternoon bottle and then will go from there, but I feel like 12 months is early....but totally just my opinion.  I don't see any harm with using a bottle after one year.
  • Yeah, I'm still fighting that battle... Pedi said to get rid of the bottles by 2 and I'm hoping to do that.  GL!

  • Maybe try a straw sippy or an open cup.  DD stopped drinking from a bottle at 5 months.  She still BF fine, but refused the bottle and a sippy.  She would only drink from an open cup or a sports bottle so I ordered some kids' sports bottles from tupperware and it worked when she wasn't able to have an open cup.  Then we introduced the straw and she will drink from that too.  She will not drink regular milk at all.  We keep trying but have had no luck.  The pediatrician said that as long as we give her other dairy products, the fact that she doesn't have milk isn't a big deal.   Good Luck!  I know it's frustrating, but hang in there.
