Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My DD was clawed :(

DD was attacked at the sprayground today by an 18 month old.  :(  At first, the girl came over and was trying to kiss DD, but I wouldn't let her.  The girl's parent/grandparent was videotaping her (not really tending to her).  DD was interested in her, so I stupidly let DD walk over to her (with my help).  The girl came over and put her had up and pinched DD's cheek with her fingernail.  She really grabbed it and made it bleed - a nice scratch/gash, and a nice welt from the other grabbing finger.  I felt/feel so bad for DD.  It is all raised and looks terrible.  I never should have let the girl get so close.  I know she is only 18months old, and I told the parent that, but the parent was no where even close to help stop it.  DD was screaming.  I went back to the woman to show what she did - the woman was like, "sorry" and didn't really seem to care.  I told her she should keep a closer eye on her kid.  I know stuff happens, but the woman was many feet away, and obviously her kid is overly friendly - trying to kiss DD earlier on, putting her hands out to touch.  Sorry for the vent.  I know it is my fault too.  Next time I don't care who it is.  I should have protected her. :(

Re: My DD was clawed :(

  • Poor baby girl.  I hope she's feeling better - but don't beat yourself up over it.  I know it's hard to step in there and say something when it's not your kid, but you have every right to protect your baby!  Then again, you can't keep her from harm all the time.

It sounds like you did the right thing by speaking up to the other mother though.  I definitely would have and probably would have had a hard time keeping my cool.  She needs to be told to watch her LO more closely - accidents happen and she should be happy that you were as nice as you were about it.  How would she have felt if it was your DD that scratched her DD???

    Good job Mama!  ;)

  • I might possibly have an unpopular opinion about this but I think  you are totally overreacting. You are acting like she was on top of your DD punding her or something. What did you think going to the woman to show her what her DD did was going to do? What did you expect her to say? She said sorry...the little girl is 18 months old get over it. That being said...it does suck that your DD got hurt but your reaction to the little girl and her mom is way over the top.

  • You are complaining that the 18mo old is overly friendly? Trying to kiss and touch your DD? I think you over reacted. The toddler didnt CLAW your child out of spite. If you dont want other kids around yours I suggest you stay away from public play areas. Mine was knocked down and pushed  multiple times a the play thing last weekend. It happens.

  • I know you feel bad that your DD got hurt. But it happens.

Just remember how you felt when this happened to your DD, b/c inevitably your DD will probably inadvertantly do this or something similar to another child when she is a little older.

  • Some kids do love too hard. I remember reading about this but have absolutely no memory of the bullet points. But yes, it does happen. Often the child is performing for his/her parents -- 'isn't that cute!'. The affection isn't real at all, it's just something mommy and daddy encourage. Like 'give your brother a hug', or 'give your friend a kiss'. It's a performance, and reall, it IS the parents' fault. That sort of display of affection is not real. It's trained.

OF COURSE, that's just my opinion. But I'm very anti-performance based encouragement - high fives, say good-bye, say you're sorry, share -- all those orders we give which our LO's may mimick but have no idea what it means.

anti-performance based encouragement? Meaning: you don't plan to bring your child up to be courteous and mannerly. This is definitely not "mostly normal" at all.

Are you an AE of the OP? Just wondering.

  • Are you picking a fight? I didn't say anything about 'courteous and mannerly'. What does demanding my child give another (or a grown-up) a high five have to do with being courteous? What does training my child to kiss another or hug them have to do with being mannerly? Why are you poking at my user name?

    Grrr.

I definitely don't plan on teaching my child to say sorry or share. Psssshaw, those are just orders we give our kids not manners or common courtesy. DUH.

    Grrr.

Did you really just type "Grrr"? Sharing and apologizing when needed pretty much equal manners.

  • Indifferent

    Oh and um.....Grrrrrrr

  • It was the claw thing... "My DD was clawed".... sorry, vague reference at this point.
  • Sure... uh, somewhat.... I guess.

    I have no idea.

  • Mfrans, stop picking on this poor lady. Now go give ger a hug and say you are sorry. Make sure not to be too rough though...you wouldn't want to gouge her eye out or anything.
  • Sure, if grown-ups do it. If toddlers who have no idea what they've done or what the problem is are forced to ape their parents, it means nothing. Except to the embarrassed parents whose child has somehow misbehaved. But I understand what you're saying. Not to worry -- my grown kids are absolutely KNOWN for their courtesy and manners. My little one... not so much.

    You are hilarious! Thank you.

  • All dogs can be traced back 40 million years ago to a weasel-like animal called the Miacis which dwelled in trees and dens. The Miacis later evolved into the Tomarctus, a direct forbearer of the genus Canis, which includes the wolf and jackal as well as the dog.

Seems so... Anyway, let's not let our kids claw other kids. Can we agree on that?

  • The term ?dolphin? is from the Greek delphis which is related to delphys (such as the Delphic Oracle) meaning ?womb.? The term ?porpoise? is from the Old French porpais which means ?pork fish,? perhaps because the porpoise snout resembles the snout of a pig.

    Oink.
