any experience with ENT Dr and your toddler?

we recently found a small lump on his lower neck in-between his clavicle bones in the front. Took him to ped and they suspect Lipoma or thyroglossal cyst. Both are typically benign. Nonetheless it's still scary and I'm just curious how they plan on diagnosing/testing at the Ear/Nose/Throat doctor. (when i called they just said the dr would explain)

If they do a biopsy they'd surely do that outpatient right? I'm dreading this - he's already scared of the doctors because he's been in the PICU for a week with pneumonia last year. Errrr.

Any experience?

TIA

Re: any experience with ENT Dr and your toddler?

  • Both of my kids have an ENT but for tubes and adenoids, nothing like that.  I would imagine the dr would examine at the first meeting and discuss a course of action then.  I would imagine that a biopsy and/or lumpectomy would be called for and yes, that is generally outpatient.  I'd start desensitizing him to the hospital a little by reading books about it and preparing him a bit.  Maybe talk about how he gets to meet a new friend and ask if he should bring his teddy bear to be examined too or bring his own doctor kit.  There is a Franklin book about how Franklin had to go to the hospital for surgery and that helped DD a bit.  FWIW, our pediatric ENT is wonderful and has a terrific way with kids that has put both at ease.  Plus she gives them stickers!

  • great suggestions. he's very much into books so that is a great idea - and the dr's kit. I will get on that right away.

ugh, i know other parents have been through a lot more serious things than what we are going through but it's still hard because it's my baby! not to mention i'm 31 weeks pregnant and super emotional!

    thanks again for the feedback.
