Why are some questions stupid?

I'm not deliberately trying to be obtuse, but I'm a little bit baffled by the "stupid question" ridicule.

I've been pregnant a grand total of 2 weeks out of my life, and will freely admit that I'm a novice regarding what is/is not acceptable during this time.    Until last week, I had never in my life heard about some of the pregnancy restrictions I've since read about on pregnancy websites and in the informational packet I received from my doctor.

Why are any questions stupid when there are a long lists of dos and don'ts that go along with pregnancy?   And even if the chances of something are remote (i.e. listeria), isn't it better to have all the facts and opinions before taking even a small risk with your baby?

So, I guess I just don't understand the snark.   A bunch of women on this board know absolutely nothing about pregnancy.

  • There aren't stupid questions when it comes to making sure you are doing what's best for your baby.  The pregnancy hormones just tend to fly on this website!
  • See...that's what we have Doctors for. Oh, and google. And I don't believe I'd trust a bunch of people over the internet to get my "facts and opinions" I need. That's why they're stupid.
  • I spent over a YEAR getting ready to be pregnant.  Learning, saving money, getting my body ready, etc.

  • There was this thing called Google created not too long ago and such questions can be answered elsewhere as well as the fact that each page probably has the same question answered more than once.

  • I have to agree. I used to really like this board but now I am coming less and less because I just feel like it is not very supportive. I agree that some questions are just unnecessary but some are very legit. Why have a pregnancy board if you are limited to what you can ask? This is supposed to be a happy place for women to go to connect with other women that are pregnant, not a bashing session if someone asks a question that is thought to be stupid.

  • Because some of them are just beyond ridiculous. And if you're really concerned about it, it'd be better to check with your doctor, an actual medical professional, rather than a bunch of strangers on the internet.

DING DING DING....we have our winner!!! It was only a matter of time!

Since you freely admit to being only pg for 2 weeks of your life, we will 'splain. Pregnancy is 98% common sense. You seem smart (seem) so I am hoping you have the common sense thing down. For example: sushi. I dont personally like it, but what do you think the women in Japan eat? Lunch meat. Really? You think you are going to hurt the baby? If you live in the U.S. (and i know not everyone does) deli meat is fine to eat. The people that say they go to subway so they are safe are fooling themselves, that meat is at a higher risk than the stuff you buy in the prepackage and keep in the fridge at home. Lettuce. Dear god, wash it.

If you have a pg question, ask your dr or google. If you want an opinion, ask here.

  • Good for you, Blair!

  • Because ideally, some thought should have gone into it before. If not before than when you find out. Get books, research online or talk to your doctor.  But also, some people forget to use common sense. Let's remember that for thousands of years people have been doing this without all these what if's and do's and don'ts.
  • There are no stupid questions.  There is quite a bit of badgering and back and forth on the boards that some people just love.  Others come here to honestly connect with others who are also in the same boat.  I literally take the snarky comments and let them roll of my back... not what I am here for and it sounds like you are not here for that either.  To be honest, I find all of it a bit immature.  And I am sure snark will come my way for saying it.  Simply my opinion.

So, she should call her doctor everytime she has a question?  What if she did google it and came up with many random answers.  She knows this website will have many women available to give their opinions.  Your answer is stupid & you seem like you are trying to hard to be mean to people.  Chill out.

    Ditto.

Also because I was unloved & unpopular in high school and this makes me feel better about myself.

  • To be 100% honest if you have a question pertaining to anything that you will ingest or use during pregnancy you need to consult your doctor.  Most of the women on this board have heard and seen it all.  Try to google your questions before asking them and/or ask your doctor.

There are no stupid questions? Really? Are you sure about this? Because me thinks you might be ignorant for saying such a stupid thing. Take a look around this message board. Stupid questions abound!

    Pregnant 2 weeks???

  • I agree that there are some stupid questions, the thing I don't get is why not ignore them instead of being a complete jerk?

To each their own, you open yourself up for this type of stuff on a public message board.

  • Please see question below about "can I get a bikini wax, I don't want to hurt my baby."

Trust me, even 5 weeks pregnant, you should know THAT is a dumb question.  How would putting hot wax on your chocha possibly hurt your baby?  Really?

It's the kind of question where you go "DUH" after reading it.  Plus, you are getting your "facts and opnions" from a message board where you don't even KNOW the people in real life!  Do you know me?  Do you know that I had a solid C average in junior high and didn't graduate high school?  do you know that I went to Harvard and am a Doctor?  No, you don't.  So WHY would you ask me (and trust me) if I say that it's ok for you to eat chocolate or take vodka shots every night?

  • Not all questions are stupid.  And yes, you can get conflicting answers, and there is no harm in asking.  But understand that on a public message board, there are all types of people out there.  If your question can be easily Googled or is easily found in a common pregnancy book, then it doesn't need to be posted.

Just remember, that whatever 'side' you are on or whatever 'group' you are in, people will disagree with you.  I personally tend to ignore questions I think are dumb, but not everyone does, and fighting back against that or arguing with it will only waste your time.  Get what you can from the board and move on, imo.

  • See I don't think it is a point of expecting professional answers but just advice. Sure some people planned for a year to get pregnant but for the majority, it does not work out that way and people do their best to educate themselves on what is happening with their bodies. I am sure the bump.com did not create this board for people to be belittled and put down. Just my opinion. I know several websites that I can go to that will give me great answers so I will stick with those...don't want to ask something that omeone else perceives as stupid.

  • Your questions are stupid because people ask these questions to a MESSAGE BOARD as if we are all doctors. Get a Clue and Call your Doctor.

Because everyone here is pregnant & most likely someone has insight.  Calling your doctor just wastes his/her time & most like he/she is wondering why you haven't done your research prior to asking a "stupid question."

  • Because it's all about common sense. One cup of coffee isn't going to kill your fetus, nor is a hotdog. Lettuce will not cause listeria and a motorcycle ride will not cause Shaken Baby in Utero.

Like I said, I knew snark would come my way... very immature.  Everyone is mentioning Google... but what's the point of this site?  Most people will read books, Google, but they also want to ask other pregnant women.

Honestly, I would rather have my doctor's ADVICE over the OPINION of an medically untrained nestie.

Most questions can be answered by google or a little research on americanpregnancy. The ones that can't should be directed toward a medical professional.

  • I certainly understand the idea that Google is your friend, but when any variation of a question comes up with 424,567 answers (each one slightly different), it can be time consuming to find the reputable websites with the best advice.    For questions like this, I'd think a forum for pregnant women is the best place to get a quick and straight answer, which is why I'm guessing so women use this particular website.

As for educating myself for pregnancy, I'm not a "cart before the horse" kind of person.   We were receiving fertility help, so I thought it would be a long time before I was even in a position to wonder about pregnancy restrictions.   The last year and a half has been spent researching how we were going to get pregnant at all.

In addition to that, unfortunately my research has also led me to statistics that women with my disorder have something like a 40% m/c rate, which is why I'll ask the stupidest of questions before inadvertently taking a risk I don't need to take.

Part of what I am paying my midwife for is to be available to me whenever I have questions.

I trust her a hell of a lot more than other pregnant women.  Especially a lot of women I see who have done absolutely zero research of their own.

    It's often about phrasing.

If you want experiences, ask for them.  "I'm not having m/s today and my boobs aren't sore.  It's kind of freaking me out.  Is anyone else having disappearing symptoms?"  is going to get you experiences and sharing.

"Can I eat fruit?" is going to get you rolled eyes and odd looks.

  • I imagine that many of these so-called stupid questions are being asked by women who merely want reassurance from others who are in the same situation and who've faced the same decisions. First Tri as support group, right? What's wrong with that?

The question might not be serious enough to call your doctor, and anyway you can't call your doctor every time some paranoid little thought crosses your mind, but what harm is it really to post the question on a message board? You might annoy someone? Ooohhh noooooooo!
