3rd Trimester

Sunscreen is unsafe for a pregnant woman

Yes, WTF?!

I was putting some on, because I"m heading out to have lunch outside.

The girl beside me says, that's not good for you or the baby. ?Do you know how many chemicals are in that?

My response: Well, I have the choice of either dying of cancer or putting some sunscreen on - no brainer really.

Well no I didn't say that. ?I just said, I'm good thanks. ?My doc okayed it. ?

Is she for real.

And she has three kids!?

  • I doubt it! I think she may be confused with bug spray.....lol

  • actually most sunscreens that are commonly sold in stores really aren't good for anyone (pregnant or not).  there are alot of chemicals in them that carry their own risks.  however i have used sunscreen since pregnant because i was going to be spending all day out at a water park but i am currently trying to research and purchase a safer brand for general use.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • My OB did advise me that sunscreen chemicals are not safe in general and he would rather have me stay out of the sun when possible (which I do), but he recommended I use the sunscreen one would use on babies (eg, Coppertone Water Babies).

  • Jeez...it's sunscreen, you aren't lighting up or cracking open a beer.  Some people don't know their boundaries.
  • I have been using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are physical sunscreens, as opposed to chemical.  However,  I don't believe there is any evidence about regular sunscreen being bad for baby!  Jeez. MYOB lady. Also, as for bug spray, I was told the risks of mosquito borne illnesses are worse than the potential risk of bug spray, so it should be used.

this is very true.  I do use sunscreen on a daily basis, but it's true...

It's true.  I still wouldn't say anything to anyone, but I only use California Baby on DD and Burt's Bees on myself to avoid most of the crap in normal sunscreen.

  • does she not put sunscreen on her children then? That would be negligent.

    Same here...

Mine recommended zinc and titanium based ones vs. chemical blocks.

BTW - I don't like the 2nd tri anymore...it's a scary place with weird people so I'm lurking here.

  • Sunscreen that has oxybenzone (and most do) is an endocrine disrupter/cancer-causing agent, so she's not wrong.

I use hippie sunscreen anymore, like California Baby or Badger Balm - the stuff with zinc oxide in it instead. Though it sucks bc it totally turns your skin white-ish purple.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

This is true - I had some questions after learning about this but my OB told me that if I was concerned to try to find another sunscreen but she would rather I wear any sunscreen rather than go out unprotected.  It's sort of a no-win I think

Same here.  It's not pretty, but it gets the job done.
