pumping and keeping up supply ?

So I have started pumping after the morning feed so that DH can feed her sometimes. If he gets up with her in the night to use the pumped milk do I need to still get up and pump more to maintain supply? Or do you think the extra pump in the morning will be enough? When you started giving breastmilk from the bottle, how many oz did you give? My LO is 3 weeks.TIA

Re: pumping and keeping up supply ?

  • I usually pump at night if she takes a bottle of breastmilk, but I really don't know if this is necessary.  And my LO is 3 weeks old and she takes about 2oz from the bottle.

  • I'm no expert, but if DH is giving a bottle in place of a feeding, at this age your supply is still regulating. I would pump in place of the feeding that DH gives her. At 3 weeks, I would usually pump for 12 minutes but it would take much longer for LO to take a bottle, so if you pump in place of the feeding, you should be able to do so quickly and get back to bed. • If you don't pump to replace the feeding you are telling your body that it doesn't need to make as much milk, & it will regulate to adjust to the missed feeding.  So yes, you still need to pump.

This, I hate to say it, but I used to pump at night even when DD started dropping feedings.  It helped build my freezer supply for when I returned to work after maternity leave, and that freezer supply is the only thing that got me through 13 months of BFing.
