I bought the Ball canning kit, but it doesn't have one of the lifters like this. Is that a must? I feel like if it was, they wouldn't sell kits without it, but then again, maybe they just want you to buy the big kit with the pot and everything. Or without the rack you can only do one at a time which would be really frustrating.
We're going to give marinara sauce and pickles a try this weekend, so I'm hoping I don't need to order a rack from amazon and pay for next day shipping.
Re: Canning Q: Do you have to use a rack?
You don't want them touching each other or the bottom of the pot. I've never tried to can without any kind of rack, so I can't say that you can get away without one. My mom didn't have one when I was canning at her house, so I used what she did have...

It did the job. lol
You can use extra rings in the bottom of the pan to create a makeshift rack - and I'm pretty sure I got that info off the ball canning website somewhere.
If you just got the supplies kit with the funnel, lifter, airspace tool, and jar lifter, that's all that's in there. I was looking for just a rack, too, but all I found was a granitewear pot that came WITH the rack in it, for $18. I was satisfied with that.
This is what I do for now until I can get a better set up. DH's granny told me to do this.
