Bleeding Umbilical Cord Stump

DS is 2 1/2 weeks old and still has his umbilical cord stump.  I noticed a little blood on his onesie when I changed his diaper a few minutes ago.  It's not gushing blood and where it WAS bloody (around the edge) had already dried.  Has anyone else had this issue?  Any suggestions?  Should I be worried?

DDs cord fell off yesterday (she actually kicked it off durimg a diaper change) and there was a small amount of blood.  I've been going over it with a warm washcloth.

  • We experienced this last week, and I went ahead and called the pedi. My office advised that there was no need to worry unless she was actively bleeding bright, red blood. In other words, finding dry-ish blood around the stump/on the onesie is fine. HTH!

  • This happened with DS and it's normal.  I started cleaning it with alcohol swabs when I noticed that it was a little bloody and gunky.
  • Yeah, I've been noticing the same thing.  DD's bleeds a little and it looks as though it is about to come off and that there is a fleshy part underneath it.  It looks as though if I were to pull it, that it would come off (even though I won't) but I know it is close!  I can't wait to give her a real girl bath!

  • DS's stump was hanging on for dear life.  His was alway gunky and had a little dried blood, at three weeks I took him in to the pedi and she put silver nitrate on it and it fell off 2 days later
