s/o: talking on cell phone in Dr waiting room?

I was stunned at my last appointment when a lady sat in the waiting room talking her cell phone (loudly) the entire time.  It was not just a "hey honey, can you pick up some milk on the way home?" kind of quick convo...it was a full blown long convo covering everything from the details of her Dr. appointment to what she was doing this weekend to plans for her baby shower....

I thought it was a rude b/c it made me feel uncomfortable -- the volume and proximity kept me from being able to NOT listen.

What do you think about cell phone talking in a Dr's waiting room?

Re: s/o: talking on cell phone in Dr waiting room?

  • I think its a no no especially if you can't keep your voice down. No one needs to hear about how your doctor is going to perform an internal at this appointment or what color dress you're wearing to your shower.

  • I've had that happen before....  Personally, I have mine on vibrate and will text, but talking seems a bit inappropriate.  Some offices actually have signs posted that they do not 'allow' you to use your phone.
  • I agree it's a no no... I feel bad enough just texting in the waiting room!!
  • I've had women do that in my dr.'s waiting room too! Step outside or WAIT till after your appointment. Or at the least text!!!

If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done

I think that's pretty obnoxious. Wait until you leave to discuss the details of your appointment. Fellow patients have enough anxiety to deal with, no need to hear your chatter. The magazines are there for a reason!

  • My doc's office has several signs saying cell phones must be turned off.  I'd speak to the receptionist/docs to see if they would put that rule in place.

  • I had the pleasure of overhearing all about how one woman had just had her baby a few weeks before and they had sex and didn't use protection because they thought breastfeeding was enough. She was at the Dr's to have some blood work and surprise she was pregnant again...I learned all about how mad she was and how bad her boyfriend was going to want to kill her and how her boss was going to be super pissed when she found out she needed another maternity leave....

  • It bothers me when people basically FORCE you to eavesdrop on their convo whether you want to or not in almost any situation. Some people really don't care if everyone and their brother knows their business, so they don't think about how ANNOYING it is!
  • I don't let it bother me - I hear people talking on their phones everywhere and it isn't too hard to tune out. My doctor has a very large waiting room though as there are several doctors in the practice. I might feel differently if there wasn't room enough to be spaced out for the most part.

I will put my own phone on vibrate and text as pp said. I would have a quick conversation if the person calling was important but wouldn't make a call myself.

  • I agree with PP that this woman sounded obnoxious.  My favorite loud cell phone person was at Target though looking at bras and talking to her mom about how she got wasted the night before, then she even more loudly yells "S*** mom its just Xstacy!!!"  I think me and everyone else around her stopped and stared for a minute and she was still completely clueless.
  • It's not allowed at my doctors office. :)
  • I text, I dont get many phone calls anyway, so if I were to get one Id tell them where im at and see if its going to be long or a short call. If its long Ill either tell them ill call them back or I'll step outside. I feel like im being rude especially if its real quiet.
