newborn baby clothes ?

I'm trying to get all of my laundry done so I can put it all away, but I'm wondering how much of the nb-sized stuff I should wash. Most of it is Carter's and says 5-8lbs. So if it's true to size, and I have an 8+lb baby, she'll never be able to wear any of it, right? I'd hate to wash it all and be unable to return/exchange it if she is too big for it, but I don't want to wait til she's here to figure that out either.

My other issue is that I got a ton of very summery outfits in nb-size. I know a lot of babies outgrow nb-size within a few weeks. So would it also be pointless to wash the sundresses and rompers that won't keep her warm enough in those first couple of weeks when she can't regulate her body temp? I'm thinking by the time she can regulate her temp, she'll be too big for them- but I'm totally guessing.

Any ideas?? I swear laundry will be the death of me.

Carters stuff fits pretty true to size and little babies tend to hang out mostly in onesies, sleepers and gowns.  By the time you are ready to take her out of the house, she will most likely not be wearing nb size.  I would return what you can for the next size up.  And once you do that, I would keep the rompers and sundresses.  I was overly anal about DD staying warm and she still did plenty of sundresses with a blanket added if needed.

  • My 1st LO was 8lbs 15oz at birth and he still fit in the nb carters stuff for the first three weeks. I'd second that new babies wear lots of sleepers and onesies so I'd wash all you have of those. You can return most of the nb outfits or just wait until after the baby to make sure that you don't want them. GL with the laundry!

  • Carter's stuff definitely puts the weight on the tags because I have a pile of it right in front of me. I guess I'll go ahead and wash all of the pj's and warmer outfits, and I'll see if I can exchange some of the summery stuff. Of course they were all gifts so I don't have receipts for everything, but I'm gonna try anyway!

    Thanks for the help ladies!

  • just so you know, everyone thought my daughter was going to be close to 8 lbs because of how HUGE i was before i had her, she ended up being 6 pounds 7oz and at her one month checkup she was 8 pounds 10 oz and still fits into newborn clothes. we actually had to go out and buy the gerber onesis because she was so tiny, and actually bought some preemie clothes (which she grew out of by the second week). i had all these clothes 0-3 months and she cant wear them cuz they are to big even still at a month old.
  • Annalise wore mainly onesies and dresses from the time we brought her home from the hospital. It was a really hot summer that year. When it was cooler, I wrapped her in a blanket.

I actually bought some summery outfits in NB size this time around. Annalise was 9 lbs 2 oz and fit into NB for maybe 1 week. She was also 10 days late. Charlotte will be here by Friday, so I expect her to be smaller. I'm hoping she'll fit into NB for at least 2-3 weeks.

  • my DD was nearly 9 pounds and she was swimming in most of her newborn clothes for a month or so... she wore some of them until 3 or 4 months.  It all depends on the brand, but I don't buy the 5-8 lb limit because DD was never under 8 lbs.
  • Even if your baby is over 8 lb, they lose some weight the first few days of life. My niece was close to 8 lb (7 lb13 oz) and wore newborn clothes for a few weeks.

  • Since neither my husband nor I were ever small enough to fit into newborn clothes (I was 10lbs, he was 9 1/2lbs) and the Dr's are estimating this little guy to be about the same size, I have asked everyone to please not buy any baby clothes smaller than 3mo size. I have two newborn outfits, two 0-3, and two 3mo outfits packed in his diaper bag to go to the hospital. I've washed everything 3 - 6 months and figure I'll sort the rest as he grows.

If he comes out tiny, I'll just be sending my mom & best friend to Target for some things on the way home! Stick out tongue

  • My DS was 8lbs 5 oz & I had very few newborn clothes for him since everyone told me to just buy 0-3 because they outgrow it so fast.  With all the spit up & diaper leaks, we had to go out & buy him more nb sized clothes a few days after being home.  He fit into the Carters nb for about a month...
