Trying to Get Pregnant

just curious if anyone has thought

of what kind of BC you're going to use after you get pg?  (I know way too early to think about it).

I was talking to DH and told him I never want to go back to taking BCP after we get pregnant, but he doesn't like condoms, so we're not sure what to do. I asked my SIL the same thing when we were talking and she is in the same boat.

Has anyone else thought about this?

  • Probably BCPs.

ETA: Yes, despite all the bltching you guys have heard from me about how insane they make me.  I'll just be taking them for the time that doc makes us TTA.  I don't trust myself enough to chart to TTA.

  • I do know that I will never go back on BCPs again. We'll either chart to avoid and/or use condoms.

  • I haven't thought about it. I'm trying to focus on this aspect of my family planning.

THIS! I am so glad for TCOYF. I had such problems with hormonal BC and am so glad that I can use charting to avoid later on.

this is what i was thinking of doing, but as you can see, i'm not a very good charter.  Although i have been waiting for AF to show up to start again, but that's a whole other thing which is why I don't want to go back to BCP.

  • I think I'm going to chart to avoid; I don't think I want to wait for my body to regulate itself post-BCP to TTC, if it's anything like waiting to regulate after breastfeeding, no thank you!
  • If DH and I get pregnant we will not use BC after the baby is born (unless advised to do so by a doctor).

We discussed it, we not be TTC again.  If #2 happens biologically, it happens. If we want to expand our family we will look into adoption or fostering.

  • After we are completely done it will be a vasectomy. I'm not getting a tubal. Its faster procedure, less expensive and faster healing time for him to do it. If I have to have a c-section then they can do it while they are in there but that's the only way.

  • charting/condoms

Unless they make me get back on hormonal bc for my suspected endo and pelvic pain issues. I hate the pill, but it can be a necessary evil.

DH didn't want to get a vasectomy.  I don't know why.

Something else my SIL mentioned was something called "the mini pill".  she said her doctor told her it didn't have the hormones like regular BCP.  I'm not sure I haven't done my own research on it.

  • My H has offered to get a vasectomy but I'm not sure if that's set in stone. I woudlnt mind a low estrogen BCP again. No IUDs for me. I've had too many friends get Mirena and have serious depression issues. Yes I'm aware there are other IUDs beyond Mirena and this doesnt happen to everyone. I just dont think its for me.

A little snip-snip for him or major surgery for you. Seems like an easy decision! BUT it is a personal one, so whatever you both decide is all yours. I don't mean to criticize.

  • Paragard, the copper IUD.  No hormones, no condoms.  It's as effective as a tubal ligation, it's good for 10 years, and you can get pregnant again quickly after removal.

    Yes

I tried to talk DH into having a vasectomy, but he refuses. I think he's just scared lol  I'm not too worried about it for us... I can have mine done with the c-section.

I'm thinking about this too.  When I was growing up, I used to think the NFP classes at my Catholic church were stupid- now I wish I would have listened!  I think charting TO get pregant is a good way for me to practice for later!

  • I would like to say charting to avoid, but I already hate doing it.  I can't imagine taking my temp. everyday for the next 20+ years.  So probably back on bcp.  I sure do miss the way my skin looked while on the pill.
  • I've given it some thought.  It's been nice not to have to worry about it for awhile.  I've never taken any kind of hormonal birth control (and happy about that now) and we don't like condoms much.  I had actually been using the sponge now that it's back on the market.  I think I will continue with that, and avoiding fertile days.
  • We had this conversation the other night, I said the same thing. I will never go on BCP again, plan on charting to avoid until we are ready for #2 and the snip snip for him!

The mini pill doesn't have any estrogen in it -- just progestin.  That's why it's usually prescribed to women who are BF-ing.  You have to take it everyday; there are no placebo pills.  And it doesn't regulate your cycle like regular BCP; your periods actually get more erratic because you stop ovulating but don't have a forced withdrawal bleed.

I'm not allowed to take estrogen for blood clotting reasons so I tried the mini-pill.  I would not recommend it.  It's all the hassle, less effective, and offers none of the cycle-regulating/period-skipping benefits of BCP.  That's why I switched to the sponge and then the cervical cap.

  • Def. not the pill! I haven't gotten farther than that decision though...
