Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How much would you spend on a 1 year old for a b-day gift?

My step sister lives out of state and is flying home with her daughter that is turning 1 in a couple weeks. They are coming home to have a birthday party for the baby since all her family is here rather than where they live. I can't think of anything to buy for a birthday gift that they can take home on a plane- there are tons of people being invited to this party.. too many IMO. So I figure the best thing would be to get her a gift card so they can buy whatever she wants/needs. How much would you spend on a 1 year old? I was thinking $25. I know she is my niece, but I've only seen her once and they are almost across the country.

  • Good call on the gift card, especially if they're flying home. I usually give a large box of diapers and a small toy for a 1st birthday, so maybe like $40?

  • I usually spend under $30 on gifts for babies/kids.

  • I was going to say almost exactly the same thing since you've only seen her once across the country, $25 is pretty good. The gift card is a really good idea since you are flying, I would do a $50 if you had a really close relationship with them.

I love your baby's name by the way, hahaaha!

  • I think $25 is plenty. Our group of friends usually spends about $15-20 on a gift for a kid's birthday.  I don't have brothers or sisters, so don't really have perspective on niece or nephew gifts.

  • Even though you've only seen her once & is across country I would still spend more then 25$ ..she is your niece. I think you should get a 50$ gift card to toys r us or some other kid store.

  • Do what your comfortable with.

For me...if it was my niece I would spend $50-$75.

  • I think $25 is sufficient if you're not that close to her mom.
  • $25 if you aren't close, $50 if you are?

  • I only buy BOOKS for the wee ones, and usually spend around $20.

  • I think $25 is VERY generous, and this is coming from someone who is close with sisters and sisters-in-law.  I think it just depends on your family.  We have a lot of nieces and nephews and I would never even consider that someone else might spend more than $25 on my DD's first bday present.  I would just give what's comfortable for your budget.  If it's $25, then go with that.  I think I generally spend about $15 or so on bday presents and my gift is usually in line with what others give.
  • I think that depends on your financial situation. I spend about $40-50 for my friend's LO. If I were in your position I would probably spend about $40-50 but that's comfortable for me right now. If money is tight then I spend less. Gift card is a good idea. Or you can get what you want and ship it for them.
  • What about sending something to the house so she has something to open later and getting her a small toy or book for the party?  I would spend like $40 total...
  • I usually spend between $50-$100 for birthday gifts- depends on who it is. I spend more on close friends and family.

I think a gift card is a good idea- and maybe a small toy or something fun the child can have right away.

  • I don't think you should judge how much you spend on how many times you have seen her, it's not her fault.

I usually spend anywhere from $20-$250 on gifts, the higher end being family mainly my nieces and nephews.

A gift card is a great idea, or how about you open a college saving fund and put money in it for her birthday and christmas?  This is what our family is doing for our daughter.

I know it's not her fault I have only seen her once. I was just saying that we aren't close. I rarely even talk to my step-sister. We aren't in the best financial situation since my husband was laid off and recently went back to work plus I'm in a wedding next month and had to pay $150 on a dress, plus gifts for the shower. $250 on a gift for a baby is insane though.. We don't have that kind of money to spend. If I were closer to my step-sister and actually knew my niece, I would be comfortable spending a little more, maybe up to $40 or $50, but I hardly got a thank you (my step-dad had to tell her to thank me before she finally called) for the gifts I have gotten for my niece in the past year.
