Q about BM frequency

DD drinks breast milk in bottles but we supplement with formula because I am not making enough for both bears... she has reflux and has been on zantac, prevacid, etc. she has had cereal in the bottle (which she hated) and now she is on similac RS.. between the prevacid and the RS, she is only having a BM every 1-2 days and seems REALLY uncomfortable in the meantime.. DS on the other hand has a BM every single diaper change (this used to be DD)

it's so hard to see her in pain and uncomfortable between the reflux and now being constipated.. when she does go, it's not hard or anything.. but it's not frequent.. how long is too long between BMs? is there anything I can do to make her more comfy?? TIA

Re: Q about BM frequency

  • my pedi told us that 7 days isn't uncommon for a breastfed baby to go w/o pooping... but i'm not sure what would be typical for a baby getting both.

i will say that when our ds was on zantac, it constipated him like crazy.

he went from pooping 2x a day to going 8 days w/o pooping.  so we had to give him prune juice to keep him regular.  we only gave him 1 oz juice every couple days and that helped him... but ask your pedi and see what they suggest.

also, i've heard taking a rectal temp can help move things along but that never worked for ds.

  • not sure exactly but maybe check with the pedi to see if the type of formula reduces her number of bm's?  a friend of mine has had to get a prescription amino acid based formula because of her dd's allergies and she said she has very few poops because of it but that it's normal on the formula..  not sure if that's the case with you?  though if she seems uncomfortable probably not..?  :-(  poor punkin..

  • I would think every other day is ok but if she's uncomfortable them it's not ok for her. Poor baby:( My pedi rec 2 oz water which did help my DD but she was 4 months old. Not sure about giving it to a 2 month old. Poor girl I hope she feels better soon.
  • At her age she is learning to regulate and control her BMs. That is probably what some of the struggle is about. DS went through that too and I was worried so i asked his GI specialist and that is what she told me. I wouldn't worry too much unless her poos are hard and pellet like (constipation). Between 2-4 months babies are learning to coordinate all the muscles required to produce a BM so they strain a lot more trying to figure it all out.
  • Ditto PP...it's more about the consistency of the poo rather than the frequency. DS went through a tough stage too where it was like he wanted to poop but couldn't. Kind of like a transition from the auto poops of newbornhood to the more conscious poops of babyhood.
