Need help-my right boob has stopped working..

ok, so our son was born 5 days ago and my right nipple cracked last night and was bloody. I have not been able to use the boob all day today as my son would not take it. It is now full and engorged and dont know how to handle this. Any recommendations as to what I can do? should I pump for 20 minutes?

  • I am not an expert by any means, but I think that if you were to pump it would probably hurt your nipple worse than it already is.  You can manually express the milk.  When I was mega engorged, I put hot (really hot) washcloths on my boob, massaged, then basically squeezed my breast until milk started coming out.  I mean really squeeze, to the point where you think it hurts too much.  And keep going until your breast no longer feels rock hard.  It worked for me.  Good luck!

  • Yeah. the manual expression thing sounds like a good idea. You could try pumping if you have one, although if it hurts too  much definitely stop. And take advil (or even stronger meds if you need to) for the pain, And call a lactation consultant tomorrow AM if you can.

On compresses, the warm ones def. help milk come out, and the cold ones can provide relief from pain and reduce swelling after you've expressed some milk. Good luck!

  • I had a similar issue when my milk was first coming in.

    1. Stand under a hot shower

    2. Hot compresses

    3. Since my LO didn't like my left side, I always started the feeding on the left before I offered him the right side. It was SO frustrating, but I needed him to eat from both sides so I wouldn't be engorged. I would almost be in tears because that nipple hurt so bad, but I pushed through & it eventually got easier.

    4. For the cracking, use lanolin and let your nipples air dry

GL! For me, it really did get easier & less painful within a week.

  • Are you using lanolin to help it heal?  Manual expression is an option, but its really only provided me with temporary relief.  You should be able to pump and you'll want to since your LO is not taking that side.  It is important to keep stimulation that side to encourage milk production especially since you're just getting your supply established.
