1st Trimester

Anyone worried that it would take awhile to get pregnant, and then it happend quickly?

We are starting to try officially this month.

I have a nagging feeling that it will take some time to conceive. I have longer cycles and possible PCOS, but I do ovulate naturally most months.

Anyone start trying expecting 6 months- a year to get pregnant like all the books advise it could take a healthy couple, and then got pregnant a lot quicker?

I need some encouragement to get over the nagging feeling it will not be a short traveled road TTC.

Thanks!

  • I was definitely prepared for things to take longer than they did. It took us 3 cycles to conceive. Some couples do it in a month, others take years. Good for you for charting, though. That's a step in the right direction! Yes

  • Well, it took us 8 months to conceive and it seemed like everywhere I looked, people were getting pregnant immediately off the pill or within a month or two.

I know you are looking for encouragement, but the truth is, it's different for everyone.  You are already on your way by charting and understanding your PCOS.  Good luck!

  • No help with the length thing. I didn't know I had PCOS till February and only then got treatment. I thought it would happen fast, but took me 10 months, 9 cycles. Which in the grand scheme of things ain't bad. But I will tell you that I conceived on an unmedicated cycle. Hopefullly that will give you some hope :)

  • Yes, I was so worried about this. But then I got KU the first month off BCP. If I had known this, I probably would have waited a couple of months. I guess you just can't plan this stuff too much!
  • Yup. My mother struggled with infertility for years before having me and we have a family history of early miscarriages, low progesterone, and early menopause. DH and I went on vacation the first month off BC and had sex on CD 1-10 (It was vacation!) I ovulated on CD12 or 13 after we got home from our trip and surprise, surprise! I definitely didn't expect it to happen that fast, especially since we didn't even have sex on or near O.

    Life is funny like that.

  • Yep. We got pregnant on literally the first time we had unprotected sex (DH went out of town the next day, and we were using condoms until that night, so I know for sure exactly when it happened) even though it was 3 days before I O'd (see the link to my chart in siggy).

After spending time on TTGP before we started TTC, I was fully prepared for a long journey, and expecting it to take at least several months. I was shocked that with bad timing on the first try we were that lucky. I almost feel guilty and unworthy, since I know so many women struggle for a long time. I think they deserve it more than me. I am so grateful and happy, but it was too easy and I feel bad sometimes.

  • First child took a while, maybe 4 or 5 months.

The second, it was my first sons birthday. I JUST finished breast feeding and was getting ready to switch over to a better birth control. Didn't need to.

This one. I went off the pill in January and was pregnant in March.

    So not too long.!

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)
  • I got my first BFO 3 months after TTC.  CHART chart chart! Get some internet OPKs.  That's my best advice.  I recommend Pre Seed if you find your CM is a little dry though I know some women think its a hoax.  I got pregnant the first month we used it.

  • I prepared my husband and I for 6-12 months, but we conceived on our first cycle trying. It was definitely a surprise, and my husband was sort of shocked since he had prepared himself that he'd have a little while longer. ;) We're both so excited now, though!
  • Ha, yes.  Bigtime.  DH and I were all prepared for it to take up to a year, like the books said.

We made the decision to TTC on April 27th.  Before that day, we used protection RELIGIOUSLY.  We had unprotected sex on the 27th and again on the 29th.  I got a very faint positive on May 7th(8dpo), and a glaringly obvious digital positive on May 8th (9dpo).

So yeah.  I guess we were TTC for all of 11 days?

    Yes

This is really good advice.  For every woman who got pregnant right away, another took a year or longer, or an IUI, or IVF.

We went in thinking it would take a while.  It took us 8 months.  It was a frustrating journey at times, but I'm not complaining.  We feel very lucky.

  • H and i started trying may 9th (our 1yr anniv) according to the estimated conception date it happened the 15th.. i thought it would take a little while longer then 6 days... i remember seeing my gyn a few weeks before going away and jokingly telling her maybe you'll hear from me soon enough.. she told me not to get my hopes up that it can take time..

  • Yes! I was very worried that it would take us months-years. But we were very lucky and it happened on the 2nd month of trying. Hubby thinks it would have happened the 1st month if I wasn't sick around ovulation time.

  • We were fully prepared for it to take anywhere to from six months to a year. I stopped my birth control while I was on vacation in Florida. When I arrived home 7 days later to my husband, we got pregnant on our first try! It was definitely a SHOCK! :) But a good one.

Don't worry...don't stress...just know that your Peanut will come when it is supposed to. Good luck!

  • Yep.  DS was conceived our first month trying.  And this LO well, we've had unprotected sex twice since DS was born with my periods all over the place.  (Needless to say, this one was a BIG surprise!)

  • Yes I was, b/c I had never tried to get PG before. So you always wonder if you CAN, you know?

Took 4 cycles for DS, and we "weren't trying/ weren't preventing" for #2 here. So I'd say we had it easy!!

I have regular cycles and we used OPK's- no charting.

  • Not me.  We thought it would happen quickly as neither of us had never had any issues and come from two very fertile families.  We were so sure that I stayed on BCP the first 2 years of our marriage because we wanted some freewheeling newlywed time. Hah...what a joke.  It took us 2 years, 4 iuis, and 1 IVF.  There is no way to predict how it will go.  Good luck to you.

  • I am just lurking, but....

It took us one try with our son. (newly wed sex of every day 2 times a day hehe) But we were totally planning on 6month to a year, so we were shocked to get our BFP with him so soon.

This time around, I have been off BCP since Dec, and I was dx with PCOS last month, and I am now on Metformin, and hopefully we will get ours soon. So... even with the same person, things can be different. GL!!

  • I am still in denial? 37 years old, on and off the pill for 20 some years (mostly on) and due to the type of pill I had been on for over a year I had no periods. I had 2 cycles and viola 10 weeks pregnant. Let's just say we were not, not trying but not being careful... and my math was a little off. We were trying to wait 3 more months for work/family leave benefits. I guess it's better to get pregnant by surprise then try to get pregnant and have it take a while. Needless to say we are thankful for the gift of life. Funny thing is we conceived while on a mini vacation where we were regressing to our 20's... lot's of drinking and lot's of sex.

Most of my friends conceived under similar circumstances... the less you stress the more your body will be accepting of a pregnancy. So don't you worry and just enjoy the baby making.

This isn't really good advice, especially for someone with PCOS.  Even if you are the most relaxed person ever, you could still have difficulty conceiving.  Cutting stress out of your life can't help with your DH's sperm count or unblock your tubes...KWIM?

  • I think you are smart to go into this with some healthy reasoning. I wasn't sure how long it would take us....the first time, it wasn't exactly on purpose, so I felt like it happened a lot quicker than I expected. Then, this time, it took us 4 months of TTC. I assumed that we were both healthy and wouldn't have major problems, but there is still only a 20% chance to get pregnant each cycle. I am pretty safe in saying it's relatively easy for me to get pregnant, it's just staying pregnant that seems to be the challenge.

I agree. There are plenty of women here who didn't stress in the beginning. Even I, who conceived within a "normal time frame" tried the whole not stressing just sexin it up every other day. Hard for that to work when you're not ovulating on your own. OP, keep charting. It takes the stress out of knowing what's going on in your body or whether you have good timing. Good luck!

We went all the way to Italy and drank and screwed around and I was ovulating and nothing. Going on vacation is not a fertility treatment.

  • I had that with my first pregnancy....I got pregnant the first month trying.  We were pleasantly surprised.  With another pregnancy...I've had 5 so far, 3 being m/c's....it took 4 months to get pregnant.  You never know how long it will take.  One of the best things I did was to learn how to chart my cycles.  It definitely helped.

Just never happened, I was very overweight and also have PCOS so I lost the weight and got on BC in January because I had planned on getting a tummy tuck this year didn't get the script filled in February and got pregnant in March! Since we weren't trying I  was 8 weeks pregnant before I even took a test
  • I was convinced that it would take me 6 month to a year to get pregnant. I went off birth control on May 1st and we were using condoms for the next 2 ? 2weeks. We stopped using condoms and literally got pregnant the 1st or 2nd time we had unprotected sex and we were not charting. My DH and I were extremely shocked that I got pregnant so quickly. I think my DH was even more shocked because he had really expected it to take much longer then it did.

I a 36 never been pregnant before and diagnosed with PCOS in 2007, history of Ovarian Cysts and endometriosis.  My husband and I were married in 2009, and decided  this year that we would see what happens.... 1st try with no treatment for PCOS.  I was shocked to say the least.

Yep.  We got pregnant our first month officially TTC (although we stopped TTA a few months prior, and I don't technically count those months as TTC, but some might).

  • I was prepared for it to take a long time too. My ex husband and I tried unsuccessfully for some time so I was getting ready for the emotional rollercoaster again! Luckily with my new dh, it happened on the first month of trying! We were really surprised and excited!!

  • I am 40, so when we decided to try we were realistic that it might not happen. We got pregnant on our first try - we were delighted to be so pleasantly surprised:). We used the clear blue ovulation predictor - it worked like a charm.
  • Like others have said it really depends. I thought it would happen right away. And I just got my BFP after 3 years, many tests, 3 IUIs and 1 IVF.

  • *raises hand* Yep, that would be me. I don't know why, maybe it's because so many of my friends had fertility problems, but I was convinced that it would take DH and I forever to get pregnant. Umm, no. The first weekend we officially started trying, I got pregnant.

  • DH and I were not necessarily TTC but we stopped using condoms in April and I was pregnant in May. I have been off hormonal birth control for a few years so I didn't have to wait to become regular again.

My SIL & her DH TTC for about 6 months before they got pregnant.

  • It took us 8 months with dd, but then this one was a surprise. Getting to know your body's fertile signs will be a huge help. If you are very concerned about your cycle length, talk to your ob. Cycle length should not be a problem if you are still ovulating naturally and you can pinpoint it.

    Good luck!
