3rd Trimester

castor oil what do u think?

I have heard a lot of mixed opinions on the effects of castor oil and if it even works.

Some OB's recommend it after you pass your due date. What do you ladies know about it? and what do you think? have you ever used it? and if so how much did you take?

Re: castor oil what do u think?

  • I would try all other methods first, lol. Ick.

  • I have a friend that swears by it. She has taken it with all three of her pregnancies and gone into labor within 24 hours, not sure how much tough

My MW is not a fan and she recommended I take RRL tea instead all through out my 3rd Tri.

ETA: Castor oil gives you the runs though so I would not personally take it.

  • A woman at work told me that she did this and it was a disaster.  She said it just gave her the runs for a few days and made her throw up.

  • The doula said not to even think about going there.

A lady at the OB's office said it worked for her. She didn't mention getting the runs at all.

  • My midwife does not recommend it.  I can almost guarantee you that you will end up with diarrhea and vomiting but not necessarily a baby.
  • It's the one natural "induction" method I refuse to ever try.

  • We give horses mineral oil to get them to go poo, I'd imagine castor oil would have the same effect. I just feel bad for anyones OB who has a patient that went the castor oil route. I had never heard of that until I came here, bizarre and gross. I'm sure it leaves quite the oil slick in the toilet! I'd say...no.

  • I think it's worth a try if: a ) you are at or past your due date and b ) you have tried all other options. It will usually either put you into labor, or give you diarrhea/make you sick. They say if it gives you the runs it didn't work :P.

If you google some places will tell you how much to take. I think it's only a tablespoon, and it's a good idea to mix it with some kinda coke product and drink it fast.

My sister used it and it worked for her. She took it, went and took a nap. One hour later she was woke up by her contractions :).

  • it can be very dangerous bc you run the risk of getting severely dehydrated from the diahrea.  in the cases where it does work, it works bc it causes such terrible intestinal contractions and cramps, that your ute freaks out.  the last thing you want is to be feeling labor pains AND have terrible, painful, uncontrollable diahrea.
  • I have heard  that it can make your baby poop in utero to, I don't know if this is true or not, but it is enough to keep me from trying it.  I would never want to chance that he might aspirate it and get sick!

  • I wouldn't go there. With my first pg, I was one week overdue and the ob never mentioned castor oil.
  • Only read about it, but sounds like it can give you diarrhea on top of trying to start contractions.  Not my idea of a fun time to start off possibly dehydrated.  If you are giving birth in the hospital, they will probably want to hydrate you with IV fluids.

  • There is nothing wrong with taking Castor Oil. Only problem is, is it's only going to work if you are fully effaced. My friend took it with both her kids. WIth her first she took 2 tablespoons (not mixed in anything) started going to the bathroom too poop and her water broke an hour later. It cleans you out that's for sure. Her second she mixed the whole bottle with orange juice and had the runs her water broke 4hrs later! So it does work just only if your fully effaced.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's bad, cause it's not. You mix it with something and it's fine. I never tasted it mixed with orange juice. and it didn't make me poop at all. Just get the odorless and tasteless kind..

  • My mom told me she gave it a try and it was the biggest mistake she ever made.  She said she had the worst diarrhea ever and it didnt start her labor (thank goodness).
