Does placement of an IUD hurt?

I really want to get an IUD but I am a total chicken.  I don't want to get it if it hurts.

Re: Does placement of an IUD hurt?

  • I cramped up a lot when I got mine and felt nauseous later.  However, I don't think that's the norm.  They generally don't hurt.

  • I have mirena...it hurt, but wasn't unbearable.  Not even close to giving birth!!Smile  I cramped a lot the day afterwards but since then I have been fine.  Good luck!
  • It didn't hurt for me... but it hurt for a friend.

I would call it "intensely uncomfortable"... I got labor like cramps just during the insertion.
  • The placement wasn't bad at all for me.  Having the speculum in for a bit longer than during a regular exam was pretty uncomfortable, but it was over pretty quickly.  I cramped a bit afterwards, but I was perfectly fine by that evening.  My doctor told me to take 2 ibuprofen before having the IUD placed, so maybe that helped me a bit.

Overall, I'm very happy with the whole thing.

It wasn't too bad for me. Similar to getting a pap smear, but lasting a little longer. And I had some cramping during insertion as well, but tolerable.

I took 2 Xanex.  It didn't hurt at all!  Woo hoo!  No babies & no pain!

That's a good tip.  I am getting one soon - thanks!

  • it wasn't too bad, just some strong pressure. I think it may have been a little more intense for me than for a lot of post-baby women because i neither had a vaginal birth nor was I finishing my period, so my cervix didn't exactly welcome it with open arms.

But i wouldn't say it was really painful. just crampy. and i did get a little light headed/sweaty just at the end of the procedure, which we attributed to my nervous system.

  • I took a Norco before I went in and didn't feel a thing...I was high as a kite though.
