Central Florida Babies

Info on Melbourne/Space Coast?

Hey Ladies!

I'm new to the board, and new to the area. My husband and I will be moving down next month from Michigan, and we're expecting our first baby in Dec. I'm hoping someone could recommend a good CNM (or OB). Is there a particular hospital that Moms prefer to deliver out of? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :-)

Re: Info on Melbourne/Space Coast?

  • I go to Dr. Mark McTammany. He has offices in Viera and Melboune and is affiliated with Holmes Regional. He is the sole doctor in his practice and he cares about each patient. He is a sense of humor and so far has let us decide on everything from what tests to perform, to how we want the delivery to go. He sometimes gets back logged because he has the two offices and deliveries throw a wrench in his schedule, but his staff is excellent at warning you he is behind (they called me before one of my appts to tell me he was on his way to a delivery and would be an hour behind).

Message me and I will send you all of his contact information if you want.

Holmes Regional has a great L & D area and you can do tours of it every Monday evening. Plus they offer a lot of child preparation classes through the hospital.

Where exactly on the Space Coast are you relocating to?

  • Hello! I am actually new to this board as well (first post over here!).  I go to Dr Africano.  He has an office in Melbourne near the Wuestoff Hospital and has privileges at both Holmes (where I will be going) and Wuestoff.  I have been going to him for a while since he is an OBGYN.  I really like him.

I agree with PP about the L&D at Holmes.  It is fairly new and really nice.  I highly recommend taking a tour and even signing up for some of their classes, they have a lot!!

Welcome to the Melbourne area.  If you have any other questions just ask!!

B&G, what classes are you planning on signing up for? Just looking for input, as I am getting prepared to sign up for classes this summer. Thanks in advance and Congrats!

  • We signed up for the 5 week Prepared Childbirth Class, the Baby Care class, and the Breastfeeding one.  I have heard pretty good things about them, especially the childbirth one (we have some friends that went through it).  You may want to take a look at the Prepared Childbirth class and get signed up fairly soon.  We had to sign up for August based on our DD of 10/28 in order to fit their "requirements" so you may want to try and get in a July one depending on your DD.  If you need any information let me know.

    Congrats to you too!! :)

  • We are planning to sign up for the Baby Care class on July 10th and the 5-week prepared Childbirth class that starts August 1st since we are going away in July. Our OB offers a BF class in office for its patients, so I think at this point we will probably try that one. And then we have to schedule in the Birthing Suite Tour and that meeting with the anesthesiologist. My planner is like a scheduling nightmare in July and August. We go for our ultrasound on Tuesday at the Imaging place by the Oaks Theatre. Have you heard anything about this place?

Maybe we'll see you in a class then. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

  • We are signed up for the Aug 1st class for the Childbirth one.

I have gone to the imaging center before for other things (before being pg) and they were decent...haven't been there for an ultrasound yet.  My OB does most ultrasounds in his office but for the "big" one we will be going there, we have that appointment set for the end of May.  We have a lot of friends that have gone there though and they say it is pretty good.  We have heard to try and get the tech Pam there.  Is your Tuesday appt your gender one? :)

  • Thanks for the information. I will see if we can get Pam on Tuesday.  Yes it is our gender appointment.

Yea, our doctor does all the other ultrasounds in his office, except this one (I guess because it is a more detailed one). Supposedly I still need to drink 32 oz. of water before the appointment, so that should be interesting. I will post the results on here and under the September board.

That's cool about the Childbirth class. We'll see you there.

  • Welcome to Florida!

I go to Dr. Benezra; he has an office in Viera for people that live north of Viera and an office in Melbourne off of Apollo.  He has rights at Holmes Regional.  All of the women in my family and most of my friends all go to him; I've been there when he delivered my niece and nephew and he has an amazing bedside manner and a very calm demeanor.  He's well credentialed and is very easy to talk to and genuinely cares about his patients.  He's been known to come in to the hospital on a night that he's not on call to deliver babies, since mom really wanted him to deliver.  I can 't speak highly enough about him.  THere are 2 other OB's in the practice (Dr. Kelly and Dr. Salup), both of which are very experienced.  Aside from my personal preference for Dr. Benezra, I'd be comfortable with any of the three at my delivery.

We actually just finished all of the classes at Holmes: the tour, prepared childbirth, breastfeeding, night out with the anesthesiologist, and infant care.  All of them were wonderful except for infant care.  I suppose if you've never been around an infant before it is beneficial, but in the 4 hour class all they mostly covered was swaddling, changing a diaper, and bathing.  All of the other classes were well worth the time and money though, and the tour made me feel much more comfortable with the idea of being admitted.

I hope this helps.  Good luck!  Who knows, maybe we'll end up meeting at the Mom's group at Holmes one day!

  • Thank you so much for all the great info :-)

  • I go to the MIMA Drs as well, Dr Benezra, Dr Salup, Dr Kelly and new Dr Tobia (have not met him yet).  They have been my OB for my previous pregnancies and I am sticking with them this time, they are great doctors and their office staff is great as well.
