How much constipation is "normal"?

Since starting solids DD now only has poop nuggets. We switched from rice cereal to oatmeal right at the beginning of starting solids a few months back. I make sure she gets lots of the P foods (pears, peaches, prunes - no apples), and we give her water with sugar-free applejuice at dinner time. I thought poop nuggets were somewhat normal until I was just reading otherwise on babycenter. Is prune/pear juice that much better than applejuice? Do you still give those daily? At what point to you call the pedi?

  • My pedi says to call if there is no poop for 5 days, or if there are nuggets. Nuggets = not good.
  • Apple juice can actually be constipating itself.  We do 1-2 oz of prune juice every day with DD and it works wonders.  The pedi explained that the fiber is broken down differently in the juice verses the prunes, so it works better.

  • Call the pedi.  Our pedi said no nuggets (jt's a sign of constipation) and he wants us to call if DS hasn't pooped in 2 days.  Usually the instructions are give him 1-2oz of water.
  • Hard little poops are constipation and you want to try to avoid that.  I found pears didn't help DS.  Prunes and prune juice help though.  Green veggies (peas and green beans) are also good.
