3rd Trimester

positive for sugar in urine

Two out of my past three urine tests have come back positive for glucose (didn't start until 34 weeks).  My doc just told me to "watch it on the sweets."

I passed the 1 hr glucose with no problem.  Did not have any issues with pregnancy #1.

Anyone else have a similar experience?  And can you tell me what I can eat when my body is screaming SUUUUUGGGGGGAAAARRRRRR at me?

I had something similar.  At my last appointment the doc said I had some sugar in my urine.  The doc said we'd monitor it but he wasn't particularly worried since my 1-hour glucose test had been ok.

Like you, I've been having a lot of sugar cravings -- my best advice is to try fruit (strawberries or grapes - yum!) although I know they still have sugar, too.  But, in full disclosure, I have trouble following even this advice! ;)

  • If I were you I would just layoff the sugar a few hours before your appt as well as the carbs. Maybe try eating a lunch or breakfast high in protein? You can develop gd around 32 weeks or so because I know a few people that had but it was controlled by diet. Just because you have it with one pg does not mean you won't have it with the next.

  • I had sugar in my urine for 2 weeks in a row, so my next appt I had something different for breakfast and that did the trick, no sugar in my urine!
  • Just watch the carbs before your appt.  I had it happen once with DS and I had a pretty crappy lunch right before the appt (we had a work party and all I ate were carbs!)

  • Huh? I never heard of this. Strawberries and pineapple are super sweet so that may curb your cravings - really tasty when it's hot out. Instead of dessert you could have a bowl of some healthy cereal - it may still have sugar but not as much and may keep you satisfied.
  • I had that happen at one appt. I had a bowl of cheerios that morning and that was it. My MW said to mix protein with each meal and that should help, but it's not uncommon in late pregnancy. I haven't tested positive since.
