Help!!!! I think I'm pregnant and TRYING to get an ob/gyn appt

I am pretty sure I'm pregnant (1 week missed period, 2 positive home pregnancy tests - I'm 35 and this would be my first pregnancy). I called my GYN office and told them I think I'm pregnant, and they told me I could come in on JUNE 24TH. This seems like a LONG TIME to me. So I called back and they said they might be able to fit me in... on June 14th!!! I should specify I live in NYC where getting a gyn appointment usually takes months, but I'm finding this really unacceptable. They told me the doctor would call me back...Oh, and also, I WORK at the hospital where my doctor is!! This seems ridiculous!! I am reluctant to try to find another doc because I really like this one and feel comfortable with her...maybe this is normal and they really don't need to see me until then?

How long do most people have to wait between suspecting they're pregnant and seeing a doctor? I have a lot of questions and a lot of anxiety, and I am not even 100% sure that I am pregnant... although it seems highly likely.

  • Some people are seen at early as 6-8 weeks while a lot aren't seen until 12 weeks.
  • Loading the player...
  • 8-12 weeks is pretty normal. I was surprised at first too.

  • My first appointment is today and we are at 10 weeks now.  We found out at 3.  7 weeks is a long time to wait but its typical.

  • OK. so maybe I am over-reacting?
  • If you aren't considered high risk or have had a loss in the past, my OB won't see you until at least 10-12 weeks.  I am going in for my first appointment today.  No ultrasound either until 20 weeks.

Congratulations! Try to relax and enjoy the first few weeks before the morning sickness kicks into high gear! :)  Happy & Healthy 9 months to you!!

yep, you are over reacting, unfortunately this is completely normal, in fact if they see you on the 14th  they are seeing you VERY early for a non-high risk pregnancy :)

  • I don't know, am I considered high risk because of my age?

    I have so many questions!!!

And I am totally freaking out!!!!!

I was seen at 10 weeks. 1st u/s at 11 weeks because they couldn't find a heartbeat on the doppler. Same exact thing with my last pregnancy...

  • Yup...8 weeks is usually when the first appt is for a normal pregnancy at my ob/gyn. It stinks, but that is how they do it! Sorry!

OK. so maybe I am over-reacting?

Yes, you are overreacting.  Unless there's reason for you to be in the "high risk" category, most doctors won't see you until 8-10w.  And a missed period and 2 + HPT would indicate you are pregnant.

  • my first ob appointment wasn't until 9 weeks. I did go see my Primary Care doctor after i took to tests, just to get a you definitely are pregnant and here are my ob recommendations for you. (I am fairly new to the area we live now) but as far as OB appointments that seems normal. Congrats!
  • I am seeing my doctor for the first time when I will be 10 weeks pregnant. Home tests are extremely reliable these days. Barring any complications, most doctors offices will have you wait until you are further along. To quote someone, "It's a baby, not brain surgery." Relax, if you have specific questions you could pick up a copy of What to expect... or ask on the board. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
  • I really don't understand why these Dr's wait so long...I went in ASAP for a confirmation. They then went over all paper work of do's and don'ts. Maybe contact another office and see what their policy is.

I have a all woman OB with 2 mid wives and 2 Dr's.

    Take some deep breaths!

Congratulations!  If a PG test came up positive, you're pregnant.

like everyone else said, unless there's a problem, you won't be seen for a little while, my OBs practice is 9 weeks and unless there's no history of loss, first Us won't be until 20 weeks. So, be happy that your OB doesn't need to see you any sooner, it means you're not high risk and no cause for concern!  just make sure you're taking your prenatals and folic acid now :-)

    Congrats again!

  • Well your 35 you are in a higher risk group to some dr's.

    Call around.

I'll echo the choir here -- deep breaths! That wait time is not unusual, particularly if you have no history of complications/medical conditions that would warrant being given extra scrutiny. It sounds like it's a long way off, but the initial waiting goes a lot faster than it seems like it will.

  • So you've missed your period by a week and 2 positive pregnancy tests and not 100% sure your pregnant? Hum.

Most OB's aren't going to see you until at minimum 6 weeks, average is 8 weeks, some even at 12 weeks. That's pretty much standard no matter where you live. If you have questions buy a pregnancy book, they say the same things the OB would.

  • I met with a nurse at 8 weeks, and saw the midwife at 10 weeks.  Sounds totally normal.  Congrats on your pregnancy :)

I would definately look for another dr sorry about you having your heart set on that particular dr.  Maybe you could have your initial dr visit with someone else (ask friends for a referral to a GREAT dr) and then maybe get your next appointment with doctor you'd really prefer to see.  Let's hope that early appointment will become open for you! :) Gluck!!

My dr saw me at 8 weeks FYI.

  • THANKS, everyone - I feel a little bit better. :) Hopefully my doc will at least call me so I can ask about things like whether I should be taking pre-natal vitamins, not scooping cat litter, exercise, etc.
  • I understand them waiting until 10-12 wks to see you but don't they have you come in at least to the lab to have bloodwork done? And to give you a list of what is safe and what is not. Thats what they do here. I would call back and see. Also if you are 35 you are considered of advanced maternal age and they might want to know if you want the tests done. They also have us come in to see a pregnancy counsler to get a family history before the Dr see's us. Just weird how its so different from state to state.
  • What you might be able to do is ask if you can see their nurse practitioner or midwife before then.  Sometimes they have earlier appointments.

It will get you in the door at least.

I'm 36 and mine saw me within 3 days, but I'm high risk as I've had two losses, needed to go on progesterone suppositories right away, I've had breast cancer in the past, etc... I'm a walking mess!!  lol.

Try the practitioner/midwife thing.  It might help ease your mind till you see the doc.

A big yes to the pre-natals, do not scoop cat litter, exercise varies from person to person.

i'm no dr..but YES, you should be taking prenatals and probably folic acid...NO, you should not be scooping cat litter...and YES, exercise is NEVER bad just don't start planning for a marathon now..

I'd really suggest getting a pregnancy book too...they're full of all this advice as well as what to expect..

  • I went right away for blood work and a urine sample and filled out about a million forms.  But I didn't speak with my doctor or look at the baby (it would have been too early anyway).  I didn't have an ultrasound or do any of the first appointment stuff until I was 10 weeks.  I think 8-12 weeks is pretty standard.  It is nerve-wracking, especially in your first pregnancy and not knowing what to expect.  Congrats to you!

  • Yeah, you know what, even if I just TALK to the doctor for a few minutes I think that would be enough for me! I could always call my primary care doc, too, but guess what... getting in to see her is also nearly impossible. I called back in February to get an appointment for a routine physical and I was told I could be seen in SEPTEMBER.

I am telling you, the hardest thing to do in NYC is not getting an apartment, not getting a cab in the rain, not getting in to a restaurant on a Saturday night, but getting an OB/GYN appointment!!!

    1.  DO NOT scoop cat litter.  AT ALL.

    2.  Take prenatals with folic acid.

    3.  Wait to exercise, but walking is usually okay and swimming.

Those are out of the booklet they gave me of FAQs at my OB appointment.

  • Sorry- Lurker here. I am going to be TTC #2 soon.

I am considered a high risk patient because I have had 2 pregnancy losses in the past- one of them being a late 2nd trimester loss. My ob would want me in sooner than the "standard' only because on my past issues. But 8-12 weeks is the norm for a first appointment. If you are concerned about if you are "officially" pregnant or not, you might be able to get into the lab to have a blood test drawn to check your beta levels and confirm the pregnancy.

Anyways- to you last post- Yes, you need to be taking your prenatal vitamins, you should have been taking those before you got pregnant....and no don't touch the kitty litter. Pregnancy is a good excuse to get out of doing that "chore." ;)  Excercise is okay for a while, just don't make it too strenuous and keep hydrated.

You might just want to pick up a good pregnancy book and flip through for any other questions you may have until you see your OB.

Good luck and H&H 9 months to you.

they dont see you early because theres nothing they can do. no tests need to be ran, you cant see a heartbeat ect. so they wait til your further along so they can see that its a viable pregnancy and can start doing all the genetic testing ect. and make sure the heartbeat is good. its completely normal. If you go in now, all they are going to tell you is a bunch of do's and dont's which you can find anywhere online or in a book.

congrats on your pregnancy!!! i know your full of questions but thats why these boards are so wonderful!

I disagree with this. I have a doctor that saw me immediately for my first pregnancy. He gave me a blood/pee test, said I was pregnant, and said he'd see me at 8 weeks and told me to take some over the counter prenatals (which I already knew). Total waste of money (and you spend plenty on it during pregnancy with testing). It's easy enough nowadays to know what you can and can't do during pregnancy by google.

This time, I'm not even bothering to call and when I do, I'll set the appointment for 8 weeks since at that point it's worth an appointment-my OB will do an u/s then.

  • Having your first appointment a month a half after your BFP is very common.  I got my BFP on April 1 and my first appointment is not until tomorrow at 10w3d.  I called to ask questions when there was something specific that I needed to ask, but otherwise it was not a big deal to wait until now.

  • I was seen for the 1st time for my at 5.5 weeks with an untra sound scheduled for 6.5 weeks and my second appt scheduled for 8.5 weeks.  I pay one co-pay for ALL my prenatal check ups together so I do not consider it a waste of money and I had an internal exam and pap smear just to make sure everything there was ok.  I also had time to speak with the dr and ask questions (can I ride kiddie amusement park rides with my 2 y/o this summer?) and got a bag of vitamin samples magazines and a cool pregnancy tracker book.  All of that made me feel it was not a waste of time either.  (Actually I think the one at 24 weeks and that kind of thing feel more like a waste of time because they are so short, pee here, step on this scale, any questions? cool sounding heartbeat, ok go home see you in 4 weeks) They also sent me for a confirmation blood test when I called to make the apt (4.5 weeks) and gave me a script for the "big" blood tests that I have to do before my next apt.   This is my second pregnancy and I am not high risk.  I wish everyone had this opportunity because I feel very safe and supported.  (it is a practice with 5 ob's)
  • The longer the better to me! We got our first u/s too early and they couldn't see the baby, which resulted in them talking about a blighted ovum, D&C, etc. If we had waited, we wouldn't have had to deal with any of that.
  • Very normal.

I am high risk and I didn't see my regular OB/GYN until I was 12 weeks.  I saw my Perinatologist (high risk doctor) at 7 and 11 weeks for ultrasounds - but those were purely because of my history of losses and cervix issues.

Blood work is not routine.  Most women who get betas (blood work) have a history of losses or low progesterone or infertility.

I would call your OB/GYN and ask them to call in a prescription prenatal vitamin for you.  If it is cheaper, you can get OTC prenatals (I have heard great things about the Target brand).  Go to a bookstore or library and get a good comprehensive book on pregnancy and read away.  Early pregnancy appointments are usually extremely anti-climactic.  You aren't sick - you are pregnant.  This is a very natural and normal process for most women.

By the end of the pregnancy you will be seeing the OB/GYN *all the time*.  :)  Your time will come.

    Congrats!

    Yes, take prenatals.

    Don't scoop cat litter.

Exercise is okay if you did it before. But dont go jumping into anything new.

Well yeah, if you don't have to pay anything for the bloodwork/testing then it's not a waste of money to get that since you're not paying for it. Not all insurance companies operate that way. All the stuff you mentioned like internals/paps would be done at the 8 week appointment and getting it done at 5 weeks doesn't make any difference. If I have a question about what I can/can't do while pregnant, it's easy enough to make a phone call to the office and ask. I don't need to find a sitter for my infant to do that and when I took time out of work the first time to have that appointment, I was disappointed and felt it was a real waste of my time and money (since I actually had to pay for the tests and take time out of work to do so).
