Re: Help!!!! I think I'm pregnant and TRYING to get an ob/gyn appt

  • I had an appointment with an RN a day or two after my BFP to confirm the pregnancy and to fill out paperwork. My first OB appointment is not until June 11, so I guess around 9 weeks. I have Kaiser insurance though, so I think it depends on your provider and your doctor's office.

  • I had my first appointment last Friday when I was 10w2d along, but they did bloodwork to confirm the pregnancy a week after my missed period, and then a full blood panel and medical history at 8wks.

I am pretty sure I'm pregnant (1 week missed period, 2 positive home pregnancy tests - I'm 35 and this would be my first pregnancy). I called my GYN office and told them I think I'm pregnant, and they told me I could come in on JUNE 24TH. This seems like a LONG TIME to me. So I called back and they said they might be able to fit me in... on June 14th!!! I should specify I live in NYC where getting a gyn appointment usually takes months, but I'm finding this really unacceptable. They told me the doctor would call me back...Oh, and also, I WORK at the hospital where my doctor is!! This seems ridiculous!! I am reluctant to try to find another doc because I really like this one and feel comfortable with her...maybe this is normal and they really don't need to see me until then?

How long do most people have to wait between suspecting they're pregnant and seeing a doctor? I have a lot of questions and a lot of anxiety, and I am not even 100% sure that I am pregnant... although it seems highly likely.

I didn't read all of the responses, so I'm sure someone already said this, but here goes anyway.

    1) You have 2 positive HPT's.  You can stop "suspecting" that you're pregnant.  You are.  Congratulations :)

    2) This is pretty normal.  I know you're anxious to be seen (I am too), but my doc's office doesn't do first appt's until 10 weeks.  It feels like FOREVER but unless you have a past history of problems, anywhere from 6-8 and even 10-12 weeks is NORMAL.

    3) Don't let your appt time stop you from asking questions.  If you have things you need to know (Is this med safe, is this symptom okay, etc), just call and ask.

  • I just have to say that I think it's pretty random that doctor's wait so long. It's one thing to wait to see the doctor, but you would think you could go in and see a nurse right away.

At my 8-week appointment I got all the information on what to eat and what not to eat, etc. Hazzards, etc. Why wouldn't they give you that stuff right away?

  • I just made my first appointment today for June 21st, I'll be 8 weeks.
Last pregnancy they saw me at 6 weeks since I had m/c the one before that.
  • My first appointment is June 14. Totally normal.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • Wow...they can get you in on the 14th....which is a little under a month away.  Take it...that is what is here.

If you have had two positive pregnancy tests...you are knocked up.

  • My first appointment is on wednesday and I will be 10 weeks. When I called to make my appointment they wanted me to come in late June, when I will already be in my second trimester! I insisted that I wanted to go in way sooner and luckily they called back and got me in. I think you will be ok, have you done any of the calculations to see how far along you may be? Once you find out if your really early (4-5-6) weeks then I think your appointment in June will be good, if your further along maybe call around and see if anyone else has something sooner.
  • They got me in right away, because I had some spotting.  So for me it was 6 weeks (they count the weeks from the first day of your last period). So if you REALLY want to get in.. you could fib a little and tell them you are spotting and you want to make sure everything is ok and that you are for sure pregnant.

Agree. What a ridiculous waste of healthcare dollars and time.

You're pregnant. Congratulations! Wait for your appointment like the vast majority of pregnant women do.

  • lol.  No kidding.  It's not like he can't tell if you've bled in the past day or two.  He will check your cervix... lol.

Won't you feel silly in the stirrups if he says "uh... I see no traces of blood whatsoever."

Not to mention that you'd be taking the appt away from someone who might actually HAVE a problem.  Please don't do this.
