Am I crazy? (CD related)

I'm getting a lot of eye rolling and "we'll see how long that lasts" kind of comments from people who find out we're planning to CD.

Admittedly, this is our first, and I don't have all the answers.  I've researched the life out of it, and feel like I know we're making the right choice, but I've never actually done it, so maybe they're right?

Perhaps these are the cold feet people talk about before marriage, lol.  I just find myself second guessing whether or not we'll be able to handle this or not.  We're going to use a service, so it's not extra work, but something is making me nervous.  What if I don't know how to fold them right or something?  Stupid, stupid thoughts...We're not nuts though, right?  This is managable?

  • I get that a lot too.  I've stopped trying to defend my choice....and hopefully when LO arrives it will be as great as I keep telling everyone.

This board reassures me that it CAN be done!

  • I got a lot of those comments also we did fine.  We had one or two leaks because we didn't do it right that was it and we are washing our own.

  • ignore the naysayers. It's absolutely manageable, especially with a service, and is the right thing to do for baby's bum. You will get commended for it when you're out in public when people see you changing your LO. It becomes fascinating rather than horrifying once people actually see it first hand.
  • I'm right there with you.  We are transitioning to cloth from gdiapers and I get the same reactions from people.  I'm just doing a TON of reading on blogs and the boards and whatnot and hopefully we'll do okay.  I'm pretty excited, but I totally know what you're saying!

  • I am going through this now, except we didn't even try from the beginning and just got up the nerve, DD is almost 9 months.

The bottom line is it isn't as hard as it sounds and people make it out to be. You just have to make your mind up that you will do what is better for your baby and the environment. It takes only a teeny bit more time to dispose of poo and do the extra laundry, but then you aren't buying those massive boxes of disposables. No chasing down the best deals, and your baby will have the cutest tush.

Good luck! You can do it!

  • I just wanted to say we only had my parents who thought we could do it. I am a teacher and work with tons of women, most who have children and all I got was "yeah we'll see how long that lasts" or "talk to me in a month" or something else to that effect. Now here I am 11 weeks in and I LOVE CDing and we wash ourselvesI have had no real leaks or blowouts and the one or 2 times I have tried to put a sposies on him for one reason or another we have had a leak.

I had the same "cold feet" thing right before we started but it was totally unnecessary. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it is SO much cheaper and I have had no rashes.

Don't worry in a few months when you become a pro you can "rub it in ppl face" in a nice way of course that you could do it!

    GL!!!

  • Same comments here.  I think I have finally convinced my mom and DH's mom.
  • Don't worry!  You'll be fine.

Heck...I seem to remember a certain poster here who gave me crap for CDs when we were on the tri boards.  She had LOADS of sposies stocked up.  Now she lurves her cloth.Wink

  • You'll be fine. The folds are easy with a little practice. I use only a couple folds right now because I like them best and they work for us. As we need other folds I'll learn them.
  • You'll be fine.  The nay-sayers usually haven't ever used cloth or they think of cloth from 1965.
