Wow, I am not getting the replies that I was hoping for...I was hoping that many of you would say that your LO just magically started STTN on their own.

For everyone that did CIO, how many nights did it take? Was it really terrible? Did your LO cry for a long time? Please, tell me its not that bad!

If I will wind up having to do CIO, I should probably do it sooner rather then later, what's the point of torturing myself and not sleeping at night right now and then wind up having to do CIO anyway...

It took 3 nights.  Only one was bad (she cried for 45 minutes).  It was so worth it.  DD goes to bed at 8 and gets up at 6:30 on weekdays, and goes to bed at 8 and typically sleeps in until 9 am on weekends.

  • DD could STTN at 9 weeks.  She didn't do it consistently until about 13 /14 months.  Although we had a few short stretches where she would sleep through 3-4 times a week at 3 months, 7 months and 11 months.  When never did any sleep training.  Her sleep improved with age.

DS just turned 1 year and has only totally STTN a handful of times in his life.  But his sleep has consistently improved with age and for the last month he has averaged only 1 wake-up a night - usually after 3 or 4am.  We had a backslide with a recent ear infection, but last night he was back to just waking up once.  It is tiring, but I don't have any desire to sleep train.  I know that his sleep will continue to improve with age.

If either one of them was sleeping as poorly at 12 months as they had been at 4 months (up every 2 hours all night long), then I probably would have done some sleep training.  But since they both showed improvement as time went on I have faith that DS will STTN when he's ready, just like DD did.  :-)

  • 7 weeks on her own, we are blessed.  She sleeps 12-13 hours straight every night unless she is woken up b/c she is sick or teething but very rare.

DD still wakes at least once a night & cries for us. We did Ferber when she was 11 months to help get her to sleep on her own. It didn't help for STTN though. She would still wake up at least once a night.

Now if she wakes we just put her in our bed. We also recently took away the bottle at night, well all together actually. So thats been a bit hard. last night she through a major tantrum because she didn't want to go to bed. It was horrible. I finally just put her in bed with me & she went right to sleep.

    edt: she's 22 months.

  • We did CIO at 4.5 months; one very sucky night, 2 sucky but OK nights and she has basically STTN ever since.  Its not for everybody though.  I didn't follow his methods, but I thought it was very intersting to read Ferber and learn about sleep habits/sleep training.  I would at least get the book (or other baby sleep books too) just to kind of learn what's out there, what the options are.

  • Well, I'll give you your answer. DS dropped his overnight bottle around 5.5 months (with the exception of needing it for a few weeks here and there during growth spurts) and started STTN on his own from about 11 months. With some blips here and there when he was sick and cutting molars. We never did CIO per se, but there were nights when he would insist on whining for a few minutes before falling asleep. My advice is to have a bedtime routine and just keep on being consistent and eventually they will get it.

  • I'm giggling at all of the "LO started sttn at blank months. We did CIO/Ferber......"    She asked for kids who slept WITHOUT cry it out.
