Inconsistently feeling the baby move...?

So I'm 20 weeks today. Over the past couple of weeks, since about week 16, I've felt the baby moving around. Some days I feel it fairly frequently and some days not at all. For example I felt it quite strongly, throughout most of the day, both yesterday and the day before, and then nothing today. It is starting to drive me crazy because on the days when I feel nothing, I can't help but worry.

Has anyone else noticed this?

  • I never felt Ava move much until well after 20 weeks... maybe closer to 30.  I wouldn't worry about it.  I've heard this is typical in your first pregnancy.  I couldn't feel her moving even when I knew darn good and well that she was when I saw her wiggling around like crazy at the u/s, and at belly checks they would always comment that she was a mover and a shaker because it was hard to catch her for the heartbeat... and I still couldn't ever feel that when they were saying she was moving.  I just figured I was an idiot.  But besides all that... CONGRATS on being half way to the finish line!  Have you had your U/S yet?

  • Thanks! I am really excited about being halfway. Our big u/s is next Thursday - waiting is torture!
  • I didn't feel #1 consistently until about 22 weeks. This time around since I know what I am experiencing I feel him much more consistently. If you are worried you can always try drinking some juice (or something cold typically works for me) and laying down on your left side for a while until you start feeling movement. But it still is a bit early for you to feel him/her consistently since baby is still quite small and has a lot of room to move around. Feeling movement can also be impacted by your weight as well as the position of the placenta. The doctors won't have you doing kick counts until 24 weeks or so. Hopefully next week's u/s will put your mind to ease a bit.

  • I never felt my baby move very much during the entire pregnancy...and yes, it made me extremely nervous. During my 3rd trimester, I had them do 2 ultrasounds just to put my mind at ease. She was perfectly healthy when she was born...and now she is non-stop on the go! LOL!  If you are truly worried, make sure you mention something to your OB at your next appt.

  • I didn't really start feeling the baby move consistently until the last 2 weeks or so.  Before he mainly moved at night, but not always.  I had the same fears!  But in the last week especially, movement has really picked up!
  • I didn't start feeling her move consistently until last week - and now the movements are a lot stronger than at 20 weeks.  When you get a little further (23-24 weeks) you might be able to see movements.  My belly shakes a bit now.
  • I had an anterior placenta and hardly ever felt DS move until I hit about 30 weeks or so. I felt flutters before then, but nothing major.

I was constantly worried, but he's doing enough moving now. Smile

  • I'm 34 weeks, and I still have days where I feel like he doesn't move as much as others. I know that's not much help, sorry! Every doctor's appt I bring it up, and my doctor wouldn't even listen until I was about 28 weeks. Don't worry, and as my doctor always tells me now, some babies are just less active! I'm sure your LO will pick up the movements soon.
