Parenting after a Loss

Being gone and cup/bottle refusal

I am very concerned about Eirik getting enough to eat/drink if I am gone during the day.  We are on the road to weaning...down to about 3 or 4 nursing sessions a day.  BUT he will only drink a water/juice mixture from a bottle but just refuses formula and breastmilk from either a bottle or a cup.  We've been trying for months now with no progress.  If I am nursing in the morning and then again at night, to me that doesn't seem like enough for him.  He does also eat solids for breakfast, lunch, and dinner....so maybe I am paranoid for nothing?  MIL is offering to pay for DCP, so I can really get back into going to work and I'm just really antsy that he won't ever take the botle or cup if it has milk/formula in it...since we've been trying for months on end now.  Everything always says at some point they will finally get use to the bottle or cup, but so far no luck.  Is my baby an oddity?  I am just so worn out trying to figure everything out because so far nothing has worked.  Will he be starving during the time I am away? Or more I guess will it be bad for him that he isn't having any form of milk/formula for that amount of time (8 hrs or more)?

Re: Being gone and cup/bottle refusal

  • It is fine if he doesn't take any milk/formula while you are gone for 8 hours...  As long as you don't mind reverse cycling.  He would need to eat during the night to "make up" for those missed feedings.

He should have a minimum of 24 ounces per day at this age of either BM or formula.  It is very unlikely that he's getting that much with just two nursing sessions.

Even at one year and beyond he should take a minimum of 12 ounces of BM or cow's milk.

  • I should have been more specific of two awake sessions.  He latches on constantly on and off throughout the night because we co-sleep in the middle of the night (from about 3am until we wake up)

  • Have you tried having DH feed him or someone else? Also, have you tried other bottles? I know these are all questions tons of people have probably asked.  My friend was going through this with her son, and it took trying about 5 different bottles and having either her MIL, mom, or DH feed the bottles.  Once he finally took to them she was able to feed him the bottles.  It took her until he was 7.5 months old, but he finally got it.

We have tried variety after variety of bottles.  He will drink juice just fine without a fuss or anything from a bottle, but forget it if is breastmilk...and he HATES formula.  We've tried cups as well.  DH tries to give him a bottle when I have gone out or been awhile for awhile, yet the most he ever got him to tke was an ounce.  And really that is about all he will drink...enough to take the edge off, I suppose. But in the last two weeks, he won't even do that.
