Babies on the Brain

XP:My child refuses to eat

and I'm about to go crazy. Now, Buggy has never been a huge solids fan, but she would feed herself finger foods, and would eat a bit for me every day. The last few days she won't eat at all. All she wants to do is nurse. I'm fine with that, but I'm getting really aggravated because I know she should really be eating solids. She's 10 months old!

She's just recently gotten 4 top teeth, so I'm wondering if that might be the cause. I just don't know what to do. I don't know how to get her to eat. She spits everything out and pushes me and the food away.

I need help, people. I'm going to tear my hair out.

Re: XP:My child refuses to eat

  • Oh, sweetie, don't freak out.  Oisin generally refuses most food when he is teething.  She'll be fine.  She'll eat when she is ready.  I know you have talked to your pedi and he/she is not really concerned right?

    ((hugs))

  • It's just a phase, and it's probably related to the teething.  I know that doesn't make it any less frustrating, but try not to worry.  She's not going to starve herself, and she won't do this forever.  Keep offering her foods.  Maybe try some new ones (or the same foods in a new way) to see if she'll go for them.  If she doesn't want to eat, and only wants to nurse, then let her nurse to get her calories in.  She'll be ok.
  • Ditto Wee & Leslie.  If she's nursing that's great b/c she's still getting calories and that should still be her primary source anyway. Don't worry, it will pass. Teething sucks - G is a bear to feed when his teeth are bothering him (we're dealing with molars now so some days are just awful).
  • Thanks ladies. It's just really frustrating because she simply refuses flat out. She's healthy and nurses like a champ, but I'm just getting nervous becuase she's 10 months, and she should be chowing down on solids, right?

Her pedi says it's fine and to just offer her foods. She says "Trust me, one day she will eat." But, you know, I worry.

If it makes you feel any better, when G was around 10 mos there were still nights when he went to bed w/o eating a solid meal because he had NO interest he was so crabby, be it from teething or whatever.  Don't worry, it will pass.

  • It far better to offer and let her refuse than to try to force her.  You know that.  You are a good mother and your child will be fine.  She's just not there yet.
