We're going to get our car seat checked at our local police dept. Should we offer him $$ for doing it...like a tip. If so, how much?
Also, he asked us where we were delivering. We told him and he said "I'm glad you called then, because that hospital doesn't allow you to bring the baby home unless you have a certification of check from a proper official."
We had no clue that it was "mandatory." We were just doing it because we wanted to be safe. We've done 3 classes with this hospital and no one ever mentioned it was a must. I know all hospitals are different but you may want to look into your hospital's policy.
Re: dumb ? and PSA...car seat check
I'm not so sure of that. He asked about our car and how we installed it. Since we have the Chicco Keyfit and it has a level on it, he asked if the level was level. We said yes and he said then there's not really a reason to come in. Then, he asked where we were delivering and proceeded with need a certificate story.
We probably would have gone in regardless but found it interesting.
Thanks for the other $$ suggestions ladies. We won't bother to offer money then.
Our hospital won't let you take the baby if you don't have a car seat, but I'm not sure about them demanding to see proof that it was installed correctly.
We're planning on having ours checked at the health department anyway. DH and I are pretty smart, but there's a solid chance we'll install it incorrectly.
And yeah, cops aren't allowed to accept tips or gifts while doing their jobs as police officers.

I remember with DS you could only leave LD with your baby 2 ways:
1) With baby in an infant carrier seat
2) With mom in a wheelchair, holding the baby.
We had to do #2 because we had a convertible carseat at the time.

If it's true that you can't leave without having an "official" check it, then I'm sure they have someone at the hospital who does it. I can't imagine that you wouldn't have heard this by now if you've gone to 3 classes.
I know the hospital we are delivering at has someone check it, but I think its a nurse.
