Intro and ques. for teachers

Hi all!

As you can tell by the ticker, I am not tooooo far along yet but dh and I are thrilled beyond belief!  This is our first pregnancy after ttc for a while. Lo will have one older sister, though-- our greyhound, Cleo :)  I am not totally new; I was a pretty  active knottie in my day (about 2 1/2 yrs. ago) and I posted on the TTC boards a couple of times.  I am very excited to be part of our little December community!

Second part, the question:  Teachers, when are you telling your principal?  I don't think I want to tell before the end of the school year  (our last day is 6/25).  I feel like if I wait until September (when it should be becoming obvious anyway) there will still be plenty of time to find an appropriate substitute for my maternity leave.  Maybe tell a few weeks before coming back to school?  Face-to-face?  How are you going to handle it?

TIA

Re: Intro and ques. for teachers

  • I am a teacher also and I plan on telling my principle before the end of the year (and I think face to face is best). I have a great relationship with her and I know that she'll be thrilled for hubby and I. I don't want to wait until September because though there is plenty of time to find a person to take my leave, there is so much unrest in our building for next year already with other maternity leaves, people switching positions and buildings, I want her to be prepared...and there's a chance that someone that's just finishing a leave might be able to take over for mine.

  • I plan to tell my principal toward the end of May or beginning of June, basically when I'm closer to 10-12 weeks.  I want her to have more than enough notice since there will be a few of us out on maternity leave next year.  I also want her to hear it from me and not from another teacher or a parent.  I also figure this might help with student placements for next year in case there are any parents who are really opposed to having a long term sub in place.

    Welcome and congrats!!!

I told my principal this past week.  One of DH's best friends told one my co-workers, so I was afraid the gossip could reach him first.  Also, my principal is great, I had no worries telling him but was going to wait till the end of the year.  He was excited to see that our "Teacher Pregnancy Program" continues to be successful and told me that I do not need to do anything official until next year.

We also discussed my possible sub (someone that just retired) and is willing to do it.  Fingers crossed that it works out.  It would make life easier.

I am telling when we return, face-to-face.  I don't hit second trimester until the middle of June (we end in May), and I agree that there is plenty of time to find the sub in the fall.  I don't want to loose any of what I have gained (a great schedule, certain responsibilities) because I am pregnant.  I know it is illegal to do that, and I do not think they would change things out of malice, but since next semester will already see so many changes, I don't want any of my changes to occur because I am leaving in December for leave.

"We end in May"  --- oh I am so jealous!!!!

  • I have a friend who is a teacher and TTC. She already has one LO. She told me there is something in the contract that states you need to notify district by 4th month. I haven't seen this and don't know for sure, don't think she would lie about it though. You might want to ask around about that. As someone who works in a school, I also think it would be nice to give them a heads up by the end of the school year. I know in our school, plans have pretty much been made and placements broadcast to staff, so it's not likely to change up on you drastically anyway. Just a though though... I think this is a very personal decision.

  • Our last day is June 11.  I plan on telling sometime around then.  I will hit my second trimester around then so I figure it's pretty safe and I will be showing by the time back to school rolls around so I don't feel comfortable just showing up obviously pregnant.  My only issue is when to make the big official annoucement to the rest of the faculty (my school is big on celebrations).  We won't be married until July so I am not sure if I want to annouce little one before then or just let everyone gossip about it on their own.

That must only be in your friends district because that is not how it is in mine.  We don't have anything about pregnancy in our contract other than what the protocol is for maternity leave.  But it is a good point to check your contract to see if it says anything either way.   Also, I forgot to say earlier congrats!

  • Congrats!!

I told my AP last week only because I signed up for a lot of responsibilities which would include after school meetings and other people counting on me, so I had to tell her that I wanted to step down from those so that she could find a replacement in enough time. I'm still keeping the positions that won't matter so much if I'm not at school, I can check a website once a week from home and get the job done. I did it face to face. She is 5 months pregnant herself, so she completely understood.

  • Welcome and congratulations. I teach too and for the most part was going to wait until the end of the year (first week of June) when I was out of first trimester. But our building is being renovated this summer so everything in the building has to be packed up and moved. I'm in charge of all of the technology in the building, so I had to tell my principal and ap so I could make sure I got some help with the packing and moving now. I've also told most of my team and my close friends, but other than that... everyone can notice in the fall, I guess! Smile

Hmmm...maybe your friend works in my district, then!  :-)  Our contract says we have to give notice by the 4th month.

  • I'm not a teacher, but congratulations and welcome!! :)

  • I was in a meeting for our ninth grade house with one of our assistant principals, and my principal overheard me tell them and applauded, lol.  So she knows :)

  • I am debating with this very thing! I think it would be a nice courtesy to tell before school ends for reasons others have mentioned. When I think about scheduling for next year, committees and placements, it does make sense. There are a few people at my school who are already suspicious that I am pregnant already! Since they know we are TTC and have been for a long time...and know of our tragedy in the summer of 2008.

So I think I am going to wait until after my NT scan (that's as far as I got last time)....and if that goes well and normal...I will tell then.

  • I plan on leaving to be a SAHM but if I were going to stay, I would tell at the end of the school year so that they could start arranging for a leave replacement.

  • Welcome and congrats.  I am also an elementary school teacher.  I had to tell my principal and vp due to work restrictions from my OB.  I am sped teacher and help with out of countrol students whom at times need physical restraint when they are out of control.  Due to some spotting/bleeding I asked them both to keep quiet and have.  If things continue to go well I may announce on the last day of school at the end of May, but still not for sure because I would still be a few days away from 2nd trimester.

  • Welcome!  I will tell the last week of school, because I will be out of first trimester by then.  Also, my principal and supervisor work all year round, so if I really want to wait, I can tell them in July and still give them plenty of time.

  • Maybe she does...:) Does your district start with an L? Lol. I work in a district near by and no one has ever said anything like that, so I'm not sure if it is true in my district as well. I did tell one of my principals though only because I had to also tell the nurse because my office is right next to hers. Uhg!! I want to stear clear of sickly children as much as possible. The nurse said I'm probably pretty immune to everything though from working with kids so much.

My guess would be if it's in your contract, you'd probably know about it.. I hope so anyway. I think I will tell HR in the 4th month just in case.
