What have you done for Cradle Cap?

I can't get the search function to work and I now its been posted before.

DD's cradle cap has really flared up this week. So much so, that she is scratching her head while eating/nursing and making it red and really flake.

I've heard baby oil works, some people say it doesn't work. Dandruff shampoo? My mom wants me to take her into the dr., but I'd rather try something at home that works (being that its saturday) and then take her in on monday or tuesday if I feel like I need to.

Any suggestions? TIA

  • Mustela makes a cradle cap cream that worked really well for our son.

  • Our pediatrician recommended using Nizordal dandruff shampoo or Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo. He said that the baby oil thing is an old wive's tale, but I know some people say it works. He just said make sure NOT to use Head and Shoulders because it doesn't work at all.

You just take a little bit of the Nizordal or Selsun Blue and massage it into their scalp (don't put water on it first), leave it on for 5 minutes, and then rinse it off. He said to do this before or after their bath, or on a day you don't bathe them, because it's not good for them to sit in it in the water. Also, he said to do that 2x per week.

We only had to do it twice and DS's cradle cap completely went away and hasn't come back.

  • I put baby oil on head and let sit for 10 minutes then brushed scales. Washed head as usual afterwards. Cradle cap went away after doing this 2 days in a row and hasn't been back since. Easy!

We do this exactly but I have to do it every 1.5 weeks or so. It gets rid of it, then comes back. Selsun blue didn't work for me and it smelled awful. His head smelled like sulfar for about 4-5 days.

  • I use dove sensitve body wash!  It is a huge container and you have to be careful not to get it into their eyes, BUT it works... My daughter had cradle cap terrible and after washing it several times it was gone!!
  • I use the baby oil gel and dab it on with a cotton ball....rub it in a bit and use a comb and the flakes come out easy....rinse head after and that's it.  It usually does the trick - sometimes the flake come back after a week or two - but then I just do this again.
  • Sounds like our LO's cradle cap all the time. He's got it sooo bad. So far, not much works. Our pedi recommended olive oil so we do that daily. I also read online while in the bath to scrub his scalp with his infant hair brush. That seems to work as well but it always comes back. Sad
  • I used California Baby Calendul Cream and it worked great....I rubbed it into my daughter's scalp and left it in for 10 minutes or so before giving her a bath and washing it out.

  • I used the Cetaphyl wash and left it on for about 5 min and it took it right away.  Our doctor said that it doesn't bother lo, it just bothers us....ifwe would have just left it he said it would have gone away by the time he was 6-7 months anyway.

  • Our LO had horrible cradle cap since he was born. At his 2 month appt, our doctor said it wasn't cradle cap and to just use dandruff shampoo. First off, I KNEW it was cradle cap and I was so not ok using a medicated shampoo on a newborn. I switched doctors!

I went to Babies r Us and bought a tube of Mustela's cradle cap lotion and it cleared it up in 2 days. I now use it twice a week after his baths and it has kept his scalp nice and flake free. It is pricey, but so very worth the money. It worked like a charm!! Highly recommended.
