Success after IF

At what point did you hear a heatbeat?

We had our 1st u/s at 6w3d and we clearly saw heartbeats, but my RE said it was too early to hear them.  My second u/s is tomorrow.  Do you think we should be able to hear them outloud by now?

  • With a doppler? It was around 10-11 weeks for us, both times (but we didn't try to hear them sooner than that).

    Good luck!

    No, at the RE's office.

  • Some doctors can manufacture the beat of the heart with the u/s machine and can do that right away. But hearing the actual heartbeat is not possible until after 10 weeks on doppler (your OB will use one at every appointment starting around then).

  • You can't hear it before 10 weeks. Anything before that is a noise manufactured by the u/s machine.

    Oh, I see.  I always see girls on 1st tri saying that they "heard" the heartbeat at their 1st u/s.  I guess that's either because they are going after 10 weeks, or the heartbeat is manufactured.

    Thanks!

  • We never heard it at the RE's office, but my first u/s was the last appt with the RE. We heard it on doppler at the OB's office (didn't get a doppler for home).

    They did let us "hear" the heartbeat at the first u/s, but I later found out it was not *really* the heartbeat, but a reproduction of what it would sound like made by the u/s machine.

  • My OB didn't try with a doppler until 14 weeks before that she would take a quick look with the ultrasound.

    I heard all three heartbeats at 6w0d at the RE's office.

    But, when you are that early, you aren't really hearing the real heartbeat.  The u/s machine is mimicking the cardiac activity and playing a "fake" heartbeat.

  • Thanks ladies for your answers.  I had no idea about the "manufactured" heartbeats.  My DH and I have a doppler at home, but I'll definitely wait to try it until after 10 weeks or so.

    That's a complete bummer to know.

    I thought we heard the HB at 6w1d, but you girls are saying we didn't?

  • I heard them at 6w5d, at my 2nd u/s at the RE's office.  Then again a couple of days later after our scare.  Surprised you didn't hear it at your last u/s.  Hope you hear them tomorrow!

    Yeah, the heart is too small that early to produce a sound so the machine makes the sound for you. It is a very real sound.

  • In the transvaginal u/s we "heard" the h/b at our 6w and our 8w u/s's. It was likely the machine manufacturing the beat

    BUT

    I just got my doppler this week. It arrived on Mon evening, and at 9w1d I was able to hear the baby's heart-beat on my own. Now.... this is my second pregnancy. I'd rented a doppler before, and know what a baby's h/b sounds like. It wasn't as strong as I was expecting, but it was DEF. the baby's h/b.

    It's not usual to hear a h/b so early, but there's no denying that I did.

    DS1= not until 15w

    DS2= not until 13w

    Like everyone is saying, the earliest they can usually get it on the doppler is around 10w.......

  • a lot of ppl on here say they hear the h/b at 6wks, BUT that is a simulated h/b.

    you can't hear the actual/real h/b until after 10wks on a doppler.  usually after 11wks.

    they simulate what they sound like, but it isn't actually hearing them.

    when i hear ppl on here say that they 'heard' the h/b so their m/c rate drops, I want to cringe, because really you aren't hearing it on u/s until you do it on the doppler....after 10plus weeks.
