Babies: 9 - 12 Months

anyone else have a skinny baby?

DS is at the 26th percentile for weight (and I think like the 40th for height). One point lower and he's officially below average. He's really not that into solids and will only eat as much breast milk as he does. I don't eat meat or plan on feeding him meat. Anyone have any ideas on how to fatten DS up?

Re: anyone else have a skinny baby?

  • my friend is also having this issue. her dr. said to increase protein, but she is also not doing meat. so we came up with high protein stuff that isnt meat. lentils, cottage cheese, cheese, avocados (high in fat), hummus. although i wouldnt worry too much, he is still on the charts, someone has to be down there. just like i'm not worried that my guys are fat because they are in the 95% ;)

  • Abby will be 8 months this coming Saturday and weighs about 13 1/2lbs. I am guessing that she is maybe 26-27 inches, but who knows. She certainly feels heavier than that though. She eats everything you give her. As far as meat goes the only thing that she gets is chicken so far.  Good luck!
  • Yep. DD is only in the 30th percentile for her weigh (she is 17 lbs, 14 oz)t, but the 80th for her height (27.5 inches). She is exclusivity breast feed still, and eats solids about 4 times a day. I have tried to get her weight up for a while, thinking that she has had to have gained a lot since I weighed her last, but she usually is only up a pound, or a few ounces. I have given up on stressing about it, and have just accepted that I have a small baby Stick out tongue
[On a side note my MIL told me that DH was only 19lbs when he was a year old, so maybe she is just destined to be small]

  • DD is 25% for weight and 75% for height.  I'm not concerned and her pedi isn't either.  As long as your DS is staying constant on his curve, there is nothing to worry about and no reason to try and fatten him up.

  • Yes, my LO is small but I won't worry about it as long as he is meeting developmental milestones & happy - someone has to bring up the end of the chart!  Just as someone has to be at the top of it.  That is how a bell chart is formed.

Also, my friend found research that showed that while most Pedis don't do it, if your LO is EBF (no formula) there is actually a seperate growth chart...I guess it is not unusual for EBF children to be at the lower end of the "typical" chart.

  • My DS is ~35th for weight and ~75th for height, which puts him in about the 5th percentile for height to weight ratio.  My doctor said not to worry as long as he's eating and has plenty of wet and poopy diapers.  Some babies are just more active then others (early crawlers/walkers especially).  Also the doctors watch his weight pattern (is he going up or down in percentiles) more then the percentile itself.

If every baby was in the 95th percentile, then it wouldn't be the 95th percentile. If your babe is following their own curve, then don't worry :o

  • My LO is in 4th percentile, (14 lbs and 9 months) but she hates to eat! It doesn't matter if it is bottles, home-made food, or jar food. I feel good if she drinks 4 oz, b/c she usually takes 2 or 3. The doctors are very concerned about her, which got me concerned. They have her on appetite stimulant, and a caloric powder added to her food, but it is not helping. I'm trying to no longer be concerned because developmentally she is fine. She even said her first word bye-bye while waving goodbye to her lunch. we used to try and force her to eat, now we are just offering her food, if she  eats it we are thrilled, if not (usually is) we let it go, only thing that is hurting me now, is all the food she is wasting.

  • My DS is now in the 30th percentile for weight and 50th for height.  I don't eat meat either, but have added more calories to my diet (although didn't want to).  Not sure if he is gaining any more because of it yet...but hopeing.  I will be watching to see what others say.  My little boy needs some fattening up!  The doctor isn't concerned at least, just me.

  • if my DS was 26th% I would be thrilled!

he was 3rd% at 6 months. I think he's gained a lot since then, but his highest % was 10th-15th% at 4 months.

I EBF and do BLW (baby led solids) and he eats a lot, but he is very active. and my DH's family is smaller, so I think it's just genetic. our pedi is not worried at all since he is growing still.

  • DD is in the 25th percentile for weight and 75th for height.  She does pretty well with solids, but doesn't eat much.  I give her a lot of avocado and my dr recommended startchy food like banana.  I say don't worry about it!  As long as your LO is healthy and happy, then you're good!
