U/S weight vs. birth weight

Hi Ladies,

My last few girlfriends that have given birth had a 38 week u/s. It seems that the weight given at the u/s was high by a 1/2 lb - 1 lb compared to the LO's weight at birth.

I know every pregnancy is different, but will you share your experiences please? The u/s tech told me my LO was measuring 8.5 lbs and I still have (possibly) a week and a half. My girlie parts are freaked out!! Smile

Thanks in advance...

Re: U/S weight vs. birth weight

  • 34 wk u/s said 3 lbs 14 oz and she was 3 lbs 13 oz when she was born a few days later...
  • Loading the player...
  • u/s at 38.2 weeks said 8 pounds give or take 10%

She was born at 38.5 weeks weighing 7 pounds 13 pounds.

  • 38 weeks the ultrasound said 6lbs... 2 days later I gave birth to an 8lb 4oz baby!!

BTW, the size of the baby won't be the hard part of labor, its the contractions :P IMO birth is the EASY part... The hard part is the sleep deprivation for the next 12 weeksish ;) hehe

  • I had an u/s in triage where the resident indicated a 8lbs. 8 oz. was on the way. He was born 6 hours later and weighed 7lbs. 4 oz.
  • At 40 weeks, I was told 8 lbs.  At 40 weeks, 6 days, he was 7 lbs, 14 ounces.

  • 36 week U/S said around 6 lbs.  5 weeks later he came out at 8 lbs. 2oz.  It was pretty accurate since they say baby gains about a 1/2 lb. per week at the end there.

  • Thank you all for the info. I guess, like everything else, I'll just have to wait in see. This whole pregnancy thing is killing the control freak in me!!!! Hopefully, I'll be over here soon....
  • 38 week u/s estimated a weight of 7 lbs 2 oz

Born a week later at  7 lbs 12 oz - so it was right on if you assume the 1/2 pound of weight gain per week at the end of pregnancy.

  • My OB thought LO was 1/2 lb more than she really was.
  • I had a grown u/s done at 40w3d and was told 8lbs 2oz. I had her at 40w 1d and she was 8lbs 2oz. I was shocked they were right on!

  • I had an ultrasound at 40 weeks, and LO was estimated to be 9 lb, 9 oz.  They tech told me that might be a little high.  Exactly one week later, I had my 10 lb, 6 oz baby, lol!

  • I had an u/s the morning I went into labor and the tech estimated our DD was 9 lbs 2 oz.  At birth 15 hours later she weighed 8 lbs 6 oz.  It really is only an estimate, so I wouldn't be too worried.  Nine times out of ten your body won't make a baby too big for your pelvis to handle.

  • At 38 weeks right before they induced me they did an ultrasound and they said he weighed 7 lbs, he was born weighing 6lbs 10 oz.

  • They told me 7.5 lbs based on palpation.  He was only 6lbs 1 oz at birth.  I had to run out and buy newborn clothes and diapers because I was unprepared.  They were definitely off by 1.5 in my cases.

  • Midwife's palpation and growth u/s at 37 weeks estimated 8 lbs.  He was born at 38 weeks weighing 7lbs 15 oz...so they were pretty close.
