Nursery ideas for not finding out sex?

DH and I are pretty sure we won't find out the sex of this baby at the big u/s.  I'm off-track next month and that will be our best chance to get the nursery "done" (or at least started), so we'd really like to get it painted, at the very least.

Our idea is to pick a paint color that will go with a "boy" theme or a "girl" one, and then add a wall border and other decorations after the baby is born (since he/she will be in our room the first few months anyway).

My current idea is maybe to paint the room green--like the wall color in the top pic--and then do Turtle Bay for a boy or ladybugs for a girl.

What do you think--is this practical?  Other ideas?

  • Here's a pic of Turtle Bay:

  • LOVE both of them --- and that green would work beautifully with either.

I've always wondered how people handle the whole nursery thing when they don't know the gender --- what a great solution!!!

  • Where is Turtle Bay from?  My friend just found out she is having another boy and I think she would love that.
  • Thats a great idea! Emi has been in our room so far, so I don't see the rush to have the baby's room ready beforehand.

Let me tell you I am so glad we didn't find out.  I can close my eyes and hear my dh whispering, "melis, look. she's a beautiful girl" as the OB put her on my chest.  There is nothing like it!

  • Jodi, it's by Cocalo or something like that?  If you google it, it comes up with a bunch of different places you can get it online.  I've seen some of the stuff at Baby Depot in the actual store, too.  We considered it for DD but decided it's a little too boyish (DH proposed putting bows on the turtles' heads and lipstick on their "lips" to make them girly...lol).
  • REOM - you just made me freaking cry!! How sweet! And congrats!

Crystal - I think that is a great idea! And I LOVE that ladybug playroom!
  • I really like both, and getting the painting done now seems like a good approach.
  • Attention, REOM:  I have cried enough the past few days--what are you doing to me??  There will be no more of your touching stories, thank you very much. ;)
  • Ok REOM -- I have NEVER regretted my decision to find out the gender before delivery but gosh darn it, you just made me have a moment of regret.  That is seriously the sweetest way I have ever heard it described --- awesome!!
  • marshall's had some really nice nursery stuff- go look there- it was way cheap!! they had it all grouped together and coordinated-lots of accessories...

  • image Our nursery walls were tan, and this the set we got for S. It has dark brown in some of the pieces too. I figured I'd add pink accents if we had a girl and leave it as-is for a boy. Two years later, I still love it! And I love the tan/brown, green, pink combo we ended up with. (Also, I'm dying over that ladybug playroom. I might have to scratch all previous playroom plans and do that instead!)
  • We had no idea and did the room in Noah's Ark theme.  Walls are light tan (top).  Below the chair rail it is done with the light tan and lighter tan stripe.
