Pregnant after a Loss

When did/do you choose a pediatrician?

This is something that keeps popping into my mind. I keep thinking I'm way early but I don't know. I basically know who I want based on recommendations. I want to call to see if she is accepting new patients but she might be now but not in July. I just have no clue!

  • We are going to a meet and greet tomorrow night at a practice near our house that comes highly recommended.  If we like them, we'll go with them.

  • I'm calling this week to the practice we want. My OB's nurse started asking about four weeks ago where I wanted to go. (The info goes in my chart to the hospital and the pedi sees the baby before we go home).

  • Ok, so when you "choose" a pediatrician, how do you go about letting them know that you've chosen them? Or do you even have to? Because you can't really make an appt since you have no idea when the baby will actually show up. Does this make any sense? lol

  • I've also been thinking about this.  I'm not familiar with anyone in our area because this is not my hometown so I am asking coworkers with infants.  We will probably start interviewing this summer (when I'm done with school).

  • We did it in second tri, when I still had energy. I was glad to get it done and decided.

  • We did it at about 20 weeks.
  • I'm working on this now. I asked my ob for recommendations as well as some neighbors. When we were at our newborn class 2 weeks ago the nurse said "what are you waiting for??" when we said we didn't have one yet! I didn't know that your ped needs to check the baby out of the hospital!

I guess I'll call and ask if they are taking new patients. If so, I think they will tell me what needs to be done?? I don't know about interviewing them though - this practice has a lot of docs so we'd never have the same one anyway. I don't even know what I'd ask.

  • I decided on one based on recommendations and called them around 36 weeks to make sure she was taking newborn patients. Since one can never say when the baby will come (even though I had an induction date) they told me to call and schedule the first appointment after he was born. He was seen by a pedi in the hospital (45 minutes away) and that pedi said to schedule his first checkup at one week. I called the pedi I chose and told them his hospital pedi wanted him seen at 1 week and made the appointment.

I do not know how this would work if your pedi has privileges at your hospital. Because our hospital is not in our hometown we had that pedi recommended by my OB.

  • I didn't realize how big a deal it was until they were trying to discharge me from the hospital with DD and they were like ok we can let u go, but she has to stay until she has a ped to go to I was like uh ok.  I so I originally picked the closet person to me that was accepting ppl that was female and their name sounded cool.  I changed when I went to the office the first time.  I found someone closer with a smaller more personal office that was better for us so.  I say start looking asap so u will be comfortable before you leave the hospital.

  • I have been asking for recs from friends, and at my appointment Thursday I am bringing in a list of in-network providers for my OB to look over and give me his recommendations. I havent interviewed anyone yet. I probably will after my appointment this week.
