Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

What's the longest you've waited to miscarry naturally?

Ok, so I am getting impatient and Cytotec didn't work for me.  I am 9w2d today, and I have a sac that measures around 5 weeks.  My doc estimates that it's not been viable for around 3 weeks, maybe 3.5 weeks.  How long could it possibly take for my body to either reabsorb it or for me to naturally miscarry?  My uterus is clearly holding on to it as the Cytotec did nothing for me, and I had a true "missed miscarriage" as I had no spotting, bleeding cramping or ANY warning whatsoever.  I can probably wait another week or two AT THE MOST - is it unheard of to walk around for 5 weeks with an unviable pregnancy??

Re: What's the longest you've waited to miscarry naturally?

  • Your story sounds exactly like mine.  Our pregnancies stopped developing around the same time. My missed m/c was diagnosed at 9w. Mine was also truly missed as I had no spotting, cramping, or any other symptom. Two doses of miso did nothing. I finally started light spotting at 10w. So, no, 5w of carring around an unviable pregnancy is not unheard of. Sorry this is happening to you. I know the waiting is very difficult.

  • So I guess some time next week I can expect light spotting or more.  It's sad that I am looking forward to this but I really am.   Did spotting turn into major cramping/bleeding?  How long after the miscarriage did you get your first AF? Did you ovulate before the first AF that you know of?

  • This all just happened last week. The spotting started on the 12th and was light to medium throughout the weekend. Cramps were the worst on the 14th and 15th. Bleeding was the heaviest on the 16th-18th. That brings us to today. I'm still bleeding. Sorry I can't give info on AF...not there yet.

From what I've read, I'm not typical. I wonder if you'll follow a similar path, though...
  • Wow.  A whole week.  I've never bled that long in my life.  My typical AF is like 1 day of medium bleeding, and 1 day of light bleeding/spotting at best.  I've been that way my entire life and it was even less on the pill.  I also don't get cramps (that's a new thing that started after I got off the pill).  I don't know what to expect!

Did your doc tell you anything about why a missed miscarriage as opposed to SOME kind of indicator?

When you took Cytotec, did you have any cramping or bleeding at all? I had horrible cramping the first night and some red spotting the next morning but that was it. Next night, I had no cramps, no spotting - nothing at all.  My doc upped the dose to 600mcg (instead of 400) but I haven't taken it yet.

  • I went until 11w 2d and had a D&C that day. No telling how long I would have continued had I not had an internal ultrasound which confirmed the miscarriage. I barely had any spotting before the ultrasound.

  • How far along did you measure at 11 weeks?   I'm measuring around 5 right now even though I should be 9w2d.

  • I learned of missed miscarriage after I called doc for very light spotting that went on for three days. Pregnancy had not been viable for three weeks (measured 7w4d should be 10w4d).

So three days light spotting, three days really heavy bleeding and bad cramping (only in the evenings for some reason) followed by moderate bleeding and cramps for one day and then several days of light spotting.

Has your doctor taken your HCG level? Also, did you notice your symptoms going away? I had been feeling much less tired about a week before the spotting started. I assume that was from dropping HCG levels.

I'm really rooting for you this weekend. I was just thinking about you and wondering how things were. Hopefully it will happen for you soon, if not you may want to consider setting the date for the D&C.

Big hugs and keep us posted.

  • I haven't had levels drawn since 9/2 and 9/4.  At that point they were 9600 and then 11,400.  So they were only slowly rising.  I barely had any symptoms early on except sore boobs and hunger.  The hunger diminished right around 6 weeks.  That was the only noticeable difference.  So my guess is, right around that point is when it ended, and it's been about 3 weeks. I can probably go on like this another week but might consider scheduling it for next Friday if NOTHING happens until then.  At that point I'd be around 10w2d measuring 5 weeks.  Seems impossible.

  • I found out I had a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks 5 days. I had my D&C at 10 weeks 2 days. The baby was measuring about 5 weeks, and I had no bleeding or cramping at all....hopefully it will happen soon, so you can move on.
  • I've been having a lot of brown spotting today. Nothing red at all, and it's definitely more than in the past couple of days. I sincerely hope this means something.

  • Sorry, I was unavailable for a bit... The first time to took the miso, I thought I had slight cramping about a half hour later. I was sitting on the couch, I got up, and I was like, hmmmm, I feel a little crampy. That's it. The second time, nothing at all. I had no other symptoms from the miso. No spotting, bleeding or anything. No, my doc didn't have any explanation for the missed m/c with absolutely no symptoms. I wish I had a more settling answer. If you are spotting brown, I think that is probably the beginning of the m/c. Hang in there.
  • Oh, and this is not really comparable to a period for me (and others, as I gather). So, don't be surprised if you bleed for awhile. Bleeding can go on for weeks.
  • It sounds like you might be on track to it starting soon :(. The day before mine started it was a lot of brown particly stuff. Sorry you are going through this but hopefully you'll be past the physical part soon.

    (((lots of hugs)))

  • enter the harbinger of doom...

It actually didn't take me long to start bleeding (12 days post diagnosis) however, if you think about it, since my baby died at 6 weeks and I didn't miscarry until 11 weeks, I did hold it inside for 5 weeks.  Seriously, if your hCGs are still going up and the drugs did nothing, you may need a D&C.  It kind of depends on how long you are willing to let this go on.  If I hadn't started miscarrying on the day of my u/s I would have scheduled a D&C and been over the stupid thing.  Instead I miscarried naturally and bled for....TWO MONTHS!!  I really wish I got the D&C every day I put on the pad, day after day after day.  If nothing happens this weekend, I would schedule another u/s and hCG and if there is still no progress, schedule the D&C.  Unless you are dead-set against it, it will get this whole process over with and give you some closure.  The waiting to m/c was (as I'm sure you can agree) one of the hardest parts.  HTH

  • how did your dr prescribe the miso?  first time the dr had me take it like a normal tablet, swallow.  but i think it works better sublingually (dissolve under the tongue) or vaginally.  also, you are supposed to repeat after 3 hours up to 2 times (3 doses all together).  600 -800 mcg (usually 3-4 tablets).

it took me 3 weeks to mc.  10 days after the first dose and 5 days the second.

if i could do it over again (not that i ever want to), i would do a d&c.
