i was thinking back on labor #1 and remembered throwing up/dry heaving and i had no idea that happened during labor (although my doula of course said its normal).   i feel like thats something no one ever talks about - so, did you barf!?

  • yes, alot. It went on for hours and it was black stomach acid, my throat and stomach hurt so bad for about a week after. Not pleasant!

  • Yup, several times and all over DH when I missed the pan he was holding.
  • I did right after I had DS1.  But that was because I still had the epi and downed a glass of water.  Yeah I should have listened to everyone because about a min later it was everywhere.

  • Yep, and I loved every minute of it.  Every time I puked, the pain went away.  They wouldn't let me eat at all during my labor, even the early labor, or when I had my epi, because they didn't want me to puke.

I'm wondering now though, is the puking a result/reaction to the pain or does it happen with every labor?  My epi wore out by the time it was time to push, I don't remember puking before then.  I hope I puke with baby number 2 if I don't have an epi.

  • I barfed twice.  Too many popcicles and ice chips.  I was dying of thirst!

Plus, I had tons of dry heaving.

  • No. I didn't get queasy at all. (I figured fate owed me one, since I was sick daily from 6-32 weeks.)

i was told it's your body dealing with the pain - sorta like being in shock or something.  yuck, whatever it is, it was badddd......it supposedly happens during transition which is when i gave in to the epi!

I wish that had been the case for me!  I threw up from 5.5 weeks - 29 weeks.  I had a c/s and I threw up the whole time.  DH walked into the OR as I was beginning to throw up and said "good to see we are ending this the way we started it" :)

HA! I puked for 9 months also and I STILL puked while pushing. Not fair! :-)

  • Almost.  I was gagging right before I started pushing.  They gave me some horrid liquid to help with he awful heartburn was getting and it almost made me heave for real!

I am so sorry. DId people keep thinking you had the stomach flu too? I went to the docs office around 28 weeks, and I got sick in the bathroom, and no one would sit next to me. The receptionist kept trying to get me to wear a mask. lol. I was like, it is just morning sickness, I swear! My friends, classmates, and coworkers feared me!

And the story about your DH made me giggle.

  • No morning sickness at all during my pregnancy... but I puked BAD twice during pushing.

My labor was not pretty... I did all the gross stuff. No shame. lol.

Yes! They did.  I had to go to the ER three times for IV's and people kept moving their kids away from me.  My DH and mom kept telling them I was pregnant and not contagious, but I don't think they bought it.

  • I thought I was going to right before my epi. I was really shaky and nauseous. Never did though.

I got reeeaaally nauseous again the morning after my c-section, right after they had me stand up for the first time. It faded before I actually puked though.

  • Almost twice. Each time they pumped me full of drugs when I asked for the emesis basin, and the nausea went away.

  • No but during transition both times I had them quickly get me the barf bucket b/c I was CERTAIN that my dinner was coming out.

Somehow I was able to hold it together.

  • That's the one thing I didn't do.  I definitely felt queasy, especially when DH was eating Chinese food next to me Ick!, but never threw-up.
  • Totally did.  Right after I got the epi.  The nurse forgot to give me the puke container and I couldn't move so I threw up all over myself.  So awful and embarrassing since I couldn't move to help clean myself up much.  And then I wanted to brush my teeth, so DH brought my the toothpaste and toothbrush.  As soon as I saw the toothpaste I threw up again.  Fortunately by this time the nurse gave me the container :)

  • I had a scheduled c/s - my mom told me beforehand, tell the anesthesiologist as soon as you start to feel any nausea, because if you wait until you feel like throwing up, it's all over. I made it through my hospital stay barf free, thank god. i hate throwing up!

  • Not until right after he was born. Then I couldn't stop.
  • Yep, multiple times.  Everytime I had ice chips I would immediately throw up.  After labor I had a sprite and that came back up right away too.
  • Haha... weeeellll.... yeah, I threw up twice.

The first time was the first time that DS's heart rate dropped.  The nurses came rushing in and were rubbing my stomach yelling "come on, baby!" and rushing to put the oxygen mask on me.  And then flipping me on my side and freaking me out in general.  And then they just all left.  And DH and I just stared at each other in disbelief and all of the sudden I just started BAWLING.  Seriously, I probably hadn't cried that hard since I was 5... and I cried so hard that I puked.  Everywhere.  And the whole time the nurses were cleaning up the bed, I was apologizing.

And then when I was having my c-section, my epidural wasn't working.  And the butcher, I mean OB, was cutting me open anyway.  And I was in such horrible pain that I threw up.  It tasted like that stuff they give you before the c/s that tastes like sour patch kids that's supposed to not make you throw up.

I really thought I would throw up more, considering that I threw up a few times just about every day of my whole pregnancy.

  • No, I got sick, and told them and they gave me Zofran. Otherwise I would have thrown up.
  • Mmm...hunter green vomit with DD#1 while we were in triage.  The nurse looked at me and said honey you are definitely in labor!  DD#2 dry heaved but nothing too horrible.  I hate puking and had severe hyperemesis during both pregnancies.
  • i had a c/s, but yes. afterwards i did a fair amount of puking. my sweet little 86 year old (at that point in time) grandma held the trashcan for me.

  • Yep. Three times I think. The first time was hanging over the side of the bathtub with DH holding the garbage can. Awesome.
  • Why yes I did.  I threw up gas-x.  Why was I taking gas-x instead of pain meds while in labor ... let me tell you.

I was in the hospital already as a high risk OB patient.  I told the nurse I was having contractions every 3-5 minutes or so.  I said the pain was really bad .. it felt like gas pain only a lot worse than anything I'd every had before.  Nurse ran with that and told OB I was in pain because of gas not because I was in labor.  Dr. ordered  gas -x to see if that would stop the pain.

2 Hours later gas-x comes.  I tell the nurse I am not having gas pain, that I am in labor. Nurse says take the gas-x or dr won't come see me again that night.

    I take the gas-x.

2 mins later I throw it back up.  Nurses finally call doc to come back and see me.  1 hour later the doc comes in and checks me.  DD's head is in the birth canal.  30 mins later DD was born.

Ahh memories of my craptastic labor and delivery experience.

Note: nurses didn't think I was in labor because my contractions didn't show up on the monitor (monitor was placed incorrectly).  Dr had checked me 1.5 hours earlier and I wasn't dilated but cervix was funneling.  I was told instead that I had gas and/or braxton hicks contractions.  Can you tell I'm still rather pissed off about the whole experience?

  • Yes, quite a few times with both. With DD it didn't end until about 2 hours after her birth.
  • Yes.  I remember looking down at the bathroom floor in the hospital and thinking "oh, so that's what bile looks like."

  • I didn't feel sick at all, until I pushed for the second time and then I threw up.  Thankfully the nurses were on top of things.  I puked twice and the baby was out. :) My husband called DS our puke baby for awhile. I didn't know it was something that happened during labor, but the doctor said it's common and helpful for the actual delivery. :)
  • I threw up twice in the midst of pushing.  My DH said he could see the head poking out more when I was vomiting.  I thought that was pretty cool.

  • I threw up after they gave me morphine.  I'll never take that crap again.
  • Yep, twice. I begged for something to eat shortly before they induced me - the nurse brought me a tray of jello, pudding, some sort of protein shake, milk, chicken broth and tea. I ate/drank it all and puked it all back up a couple of hours later. The second time I came mere inches from getting it all over my doctor.
