It's the second thing on the ingredients list.
My friend has mentionned that her daughter is over-weight to me a few times now. She's 25lbs at 1 year old. My son is two and rather under-weight at about the same weight.
But her little girl is a total carb and sugar junkie. I just don't have the heart to tell her.
Please, please, learn the "code" words for types of sugar and know that ingredients are listed from highest to lowest quantities. sigh
Re: You do know that Mum-Mums are full of sugar...right?
DS is right there with your Henry
Like "organic evaporated cane juice"??
lol
If sugar (of any wording) is in the top 5 ingredients I think about the product for quite some time before purchasing.
really. 25 pounds is overweight?
:::sigh:::
go away.

She was 6 lbs at birth, so I guess the "triple your birth-weight" in the first year thing...?
I didn't think it was too bad either.
Its not like these kids are only eating Mum-Mums all day long...
and my kids are almost one and are just approaching 17 and 18 pounds and are in the bottom 5th percentiles for weight... have been eating Mum-Mums since they were 7 months old... I guess we should put them on a diet because they are going to get fat...
So was my girl... she has ALWAYS been at the 95% for weight... SOMEONE has to be there... doesn't mean they are obese OR overweight.

Well then, my 20lb 6 month old is a tank!
I don't think anyone here has their child on a Mum Mum regimen. A snack here and there is not going to cause an issue...not that a 25lb 1 year old is an issue.
This is only if your LO was at an average birthweight. My LO was just under 5 lbs, and now he's pushing 20. He's DEFINITELY not obese.
this exactly! height has a huge factor in this whole conversation as well.
well if teevee says it then it must be true!
I think we all get the point, but are a little pissed that the OP seems to think that a 25 pounds one year old is overweight.

Are you saying that I shouldn't be giving DS a basket full of Peeps for Easter??? Crap. Darn sugar code words.
THANK YOU!
I DIDN'T say it, my friend did...ugh. And Mum-Mums are her "daily" snack. So are those gerber candies "fruits"
Anyhow, sugar reduces your bodies ability to fight infection, it causes you to "crash" after a sugar "high" and it also can contribute to diabetes and more.
Does that mean that I shouldn't give DS a basket full of Peeps for Easter??? Crap. Darn sugar code words
Edit: Sorry for the double post - "the server was busy" got me.
I was just using him as a reference. I'm pretty sure you could find many other Doctors that would say the same thing. Should I start linking reputable websites/quoting books to make my point instead?
i think that sugar is that high on the list b/c they can't really list air as an ingredient- each one is a whopping 7.5 calories- i doubt they are making any kid obese.
and my 20 lb 9 month old is 40th percentile for weight- interesting
Proud mama to a boys- 6/17/09 - a girl 2/23/11- and a boy 8/20/12
They have .5g of sugar per serving (and a serving is 2 mum-mums). Yes, it's second on the ingredient list, but there are only 4 ingredients in it. Mostly it's just rice. So there could be one teaspoon of sugar and one half teaspoon of salt in five pounds of rice and the ingredients would say 'rice, sugar, salt.'
[For reference, one of those little sugar packets at restaurants has 4 grams of sugar (15 calories) in it. So each mum-mum has 1/16th of a sugar packet--and about 1 calorie from sugar.]
Obviously no one should be feeding their kid only mum-mums but to say they are full of sugar is ridiculous. As is saying that a 25lb one year old is overweight (whoever said it).
Sigh.
Good evening everyone! I agree with PP. Mum Mums aren't as bad as other "baby" foods. I think Gerber puffs are ridiculously sweet and most of those yogurt drops have sugar. The fact is most foods aren't going to be entirely sugar free, the natural sugar in food is still present.
First, wth, babies are not overweight at ONE. Whoever thinks that has serious issues.
Second:
Ingredients are listed as a percentage.
A food might be 99.9% rice flour, and 0.05% sugar, 0.03% salt, and 0.02% whey (I am not bothering with the math, as PP's have shown that a banana has way more sugar than a MumMum, I am just pointing out the faulting reasoning behind the crappy way the US lists food ingredients)
So, Sugar can be the second ingredient and be a minuscule part of the actual food item.
25lbs at 1 year is NOT overweight! Most babies double their weight at 6 months and triple at a year. If DD tripes at a year she will be close to 25lbs....and she is tiny! At her 9 month appt she weight 17lbs.
Your tone was rather condescending. We all know "code" words, and that ingredients are listed from highest to lowest. A little bit of sugar (the tiny amount in mum mums) is not going to make a baby obese.
rice crackers is not the reason that our nation/world is overweight.
DDs carrots have more sugar per serving and its not even listed as an ingredient.
Get your head out of your ass and learn to process information, kthx.
Yeah, I was going to say, obviously sugar is in the top 5 ingredients, there is only 3 ingredients in them. A mom would be an idiot to think mum mums were a meal, and just because its placed as the second ingredient (and hey, its the second to last ingredient too!) doesnt mean its "full" of sugar.
And the OP did make it sound like she felt the 25lb kid at a year was obese considering she used that child as her example of a fat child to support her PSA.
screw mum mums ... my DD ate two small chocolate chip cookies at a fancy restaurant we went to over the weekend .... and she is only 17 lbs at 11 months .... i must be a horrible mommy to have let her have them!!
seriously people - a little sugary treat here and there won't do any harm!
This.
And according to the package I have of organic rice cereal. There is the same amount of sugar in 2T of the cereal as there is in 2 MumMums.
Maybe Dr.Oz should tell people to read the entire package!
this entire thread is ridiculous.
I know kids that only eat sugar and crap and are UNDERweight. They are extremely unhealthy but no one seems that concerned because they appear to be a "normal" weight.
So, just because a child is overweight doesn't mean they are eating too much sugar - or any sugar for that matter. They may just eat a lot of healthy food. Or they may just be big kids that will grow into their bodies.
Jo was 25 lbs at 6 months on nothing but breastmilk.
I lead to her obesity and should be ashamed. Clearly there were mum mums in my tatas.
You rock.
