Interesting info about PPD

My cousin's wife is a psych student, and she was just telling me {via gchat} that there is a study that says PPD is more likely to occur in women who have to go back to work.

She said that women who have to work for financial reasons often struggle more with PPD than those that want to work or those that SAH.

I had never heard this, and I don't know if it is true or not.  It is some study that is going on right now or something.

I get upset already thinking about how I will have to leave my LO to come to a job I can't stand. It's going to be difficult.

I feel some of this too. I am hating my job right now too and even though I get a very generous leave package I am already dreading coming back.

  • That's a completely confounded study b/c it ignores the fact that women who have to go back to work are more likely to be in families with financial issues that can also contribute to more stress, it's not just the being forced to work part.

  • That makes sense.

I heard somewhere recently that people who experienced pregnancy induced depression were more likely to get PPD.

I hope thats one thing I'm able to avoid.  I can't imagine having that and dealing with 2 infants.

Absolutely true- one of the risk factors of PPD is having a personal history of depression, or pregnancy-related depression. Another risk factor is complicated pregnancy/childbirth.

  • On the other hand I have read a lot of comments from mothers on the bump and have friends who have said that although they love and miss their LO during the day, it's nice to go back to work and have a break from them. I see both sides for sure though.
  • I will be adding this to my arguments for being a SAHM.

    It's interesting info.

  • That totally makes sense to me.  It's depressing to have to work in a job you don't like to begin with.  It's one thing to work your a$$ off and exhaust yourself for a job you love, but if you want to be home it's depressing to have to work that hard for a job you don't like.  I'll eventually be able to quit, but not for awhile.  The thought of leaving my newborn at home depresses the hel! out of me.  And I'm not even ku yet!

  • I can completely understand that!  And honestly, I would agree.  The biggest struggle for me has been going back to work and leaving Christopher.  I miss him so much when I am at work.  It has been really hard.

Not necessarily true. I am actually a little offended by this comment.  Yes DH and I have debt, but we by no means have "money issues."  We are able to pay our bills easily every month and provide well for Christopher.  We are just not in a financial situation right now where I could SAH.  Maybe in another year or two.

The women who are making these comments may or may not have to go back to work though.
